Death Takes A Holiday
Saw this off broadway in June 2011 - The show itself was so-so (weak book, uneven performances) , but the music...oh my, so equisite , so hauntingly beautiful and apt for the story. Some of these tunes deserve to be Broadway classics, but I fear this will not get the needed exposure. Too bad, becuase this is a gem of a recording.
Exquisite Music
This is one of those rare cast recordings that is so wonderful you think the show must have been a major hit. This one wasn't, but with a score like this, who cares? PS Classics has preserved Maury Yeston's melodic score for the ages, and thirty years from now fans will be wondering why this brilliant show isn't done more often.
Whether or not the show was any good, this recording is simply beautiful. Melodic music, wonderfully sung and brilliantly played by a small orchestra that sounds fifteen players larger than it is. Fans of Yeston's earlier scores (Nine, Phantom, Titanic, Grand Hotel) will not be disappointed. Several tracks ("Alone Here With You", "Losing Roberto", "Finally To Know") are likely to become standards.
This is easily one of the best cast recordings released in the last decade -Not to be missed.
Wonderful Show, even better Cast Album
Saw the show twice. Once with Julian Ovenden and again with Kevin Earley. Julien Ovenden had a phenomenal voice and stage presence. Kevin was good, but not great. On this recording, I thought his voice was outstanding, as were all the other singers. Even better than either performances I attended. The music is beautiful, with several outstanding pieces (Alive!, More and More, Losing Roberto). I've really enjoyed listening to, and happy they recorded, this cast album by Maury Yeston.
