Deeper marks Christian singer/songwriter JJ Heller’s return to her acoustic-oriented roots. The album offers previously released tunes in more intimate settings, along with several new compositions highlighting both Heller’s family-oriented lyrics and her buoyant way with folk/pop melodies. The tracks have a warmly domestic feel to them, heard especially on “I Get To Be the One” and “When I’m with You” (both conveying love from a parent to a child). Her polished songcraft and jazzy leanings add richness to tunes like “Sunshine” and “The Very Thought of You” without spoiling their wide-eyed charm. Heller’s spiritual expressions are rooted in everyday life—“Someday” and “Red Against Your Black” examine the world with hopeful, resilient faith. “Kingdom Come” (rendered here with quiet intensity) sums up much of Heller’s appeal as an artist. Producers Mitch Dane and Ben Shive keep things tasteful and a little quirky, adding soft woodwinds and bouncy keyboards to embroider the vocals and acoustic guitars.

JJ Heller [Deeper]
This is yet another one of those "gourmet" albums that only comes along with JJ Heller releases a new album. We are super fortunate to have JJ and David Heller release another stellar album while we're still savoring "When I'm With You." I have to fight back tears while listening to several of the songs, especially the odes to JJ's daughters--"I Get To Be The One" and "When I'm With You." The acoustic recordings of JJ's worshipful songs, "In The End," "Control," "No Fight Left," "Someday," "Red Against Your Black" and "Kingdom Come" are not to be missed. This is easily the most authentic album of the year. If you like singer-songwriters like Audrey Assad, Sara Groves, Brooke Fraser and Sandra McCracken, then you must pick up "Deeper" by JJ Heller.
