iTunes Review
No Oasis album, and arguably no British album in history, has had the impact of Definitely Maybe. The Smiths and the Stone Roses had released monumental albums in Eighties, but not until Oasis did a band succeed in taking the attitude of punk and blowing it up to stadium rock proportions. It was recipe that energized an entire generation of youth culture in England, and around the world. Definitely Maybe is the only album Oasis made without fame or fortune, and its songs are kept perennially fresh through their connection to teenage rock fantasies. “Rock’N’Roll Star,” “Up In the Sky,” “Supersonic,” and “Cigarettes and Alcohol” are anthems fuelled by nothing but power chords, attitude, and a keen sense of melody. There is nothing here that an adolescent garage band couldn’t pick up with a day of practice, which keeps legions of young rock hopefuls returning to Definitely Maybe year after year. The album emanates camradie and confidence, embodied by Liam Gallagher’s confrontational vocals — equal parts John Lennon and Johnny Rotten. Its massive success was proof that a band’s belief in itself was enough to elevate the music to levels of greatness.

The Beginning of Something Wonderful
Oasis knows how to kick off a career. Noel famously said that his first two albums were better than the first two Beatles and Rolling Stones albums, and its hard to say he was wrong. Oasis kicked the door down with a sound and attitude that was impossible to stop. Also, Oasis knows how to start an album. They announce themselves to the world with Rock 'N' Roll Star. It might've been a bit presumptuous in tone at the time, but Oasis always believed they were rock stars and failure wasn't an option. And with tunes like this, how could they fail? When this came out, there was nothing like it out there. This isn't terribly complicated music, its three chords and its straightforward, but it was a sound so honest that it hit you like a ton of bricks. While often the Beatles comparison is overplayed (most of the time Oasis are more similar to The Rolling Stones), Shakermaker does bear out that comparison. It reminds you of The Beatles without being overly deriviative. Which brings up another point about Oasis's music. Noel Gallagher has never been one to shy away from borrowing, but the final product is often so different in feel and attitude from what was borrowed, that its more akin to sampling than stealing, its taking something old and making something new and fresh out of it. That takes a creative talent all its own. Live Forever is what put Oasis in the position to where Wonderwall could take them to the top. Without Live Forever, nobody would ever have a clue who Oasis was, they'd just be some bum madchester band that some guy says are great, but you've never heard of them. The song doesn't resolve in the chord progression, which is usually a no-no, but here its just perfect. The songs lyrical theme is united musically with the feeling that the song can literally go on forever. Just goes to show Noel's brilliance of finding just the right words to fit the music. Sure the words, if taken literally, don't mean anything in specific. That's not the point. The lyrics convey a feeling that the music enhances. You don't think about Live Forever, you feel Live Forever, and Oasis more generally. Up in the Sky breaks up the first 3 and takes on a bit of a break with rollicking fun. Its a nice little song in its own way, bu its purpose is more to make the album work than be a single song on its own. You need songs like this to make an album work, its why this album sounds better than a greatest hit compilation. Noel gets right back to business with the driving rocker that is Columbia. When the guitar kicks in at 30 seconds and then everything locks together fully at 47 seconds and Liam starts with "There we were, now here we are" you know you are in for a Tune. The song just punches you in the face, in a good way. Supersonic has Liam at his sneering best. Again, the song isn't particularly about anything, other than an attitude. If you start analyzing the lyrics, you've lost and you don't get Oasis. If you listen to the sounds and the attitude you'll find the magic. Oasis picks up the tempo for the full on rocker, but keeps the same basic attitude for Bring It On Down. While its not a "great" song in the way that Live Forever is, when you listen to the whole album, it has a way of making you say "F Yeah!". It's straightforward rock and roll, and that's all that can really be said about it. Cigarettes and Alcohol is a straight up boogie rock tune. Sure it borrows from bang a gong, get it on by T. Rex, but it turns it into something wholly different. Taken on its own terms, its hard to not love the song. Who can't identify with "is it worth the aggravation to find yourself a job when there's nothing worth working for"? And who can't identify with the notion that sometimes it just seems that a few cheap vices can, momentarily, solve all your problems. Digsy's Dinner essentially breaks up the album with a funny little tune. It's not brilliant, you won't find yourself thinking "man, I really want to listen to Digsy's Dinner." But you'll enjoy it when it comes on. Slide Away is such a brilliant, haunting song. Nothing says it better than "don't know, don't care, all I want is for you to take me there." The song is haunting, but hopeful at the same time, which very few songwriters can pull off. Noel did it here perhaps better than anyone of his generation. Married With Children ends the album on a lighthearted note. Gently jabbing at the love/hate aspect of relationships, it lets you polish off with a little light-hearted smile. Oasis, while being determined to be the best rock band in the world, took themselves a lot less seriously than everybody thought. It would ahve been easy to end the album with Slide Away, and in many ways that was the obvious thing to do. Noel took a different approach and let you end it all with a wink and a nod. It was hard to know when this album came out exactly what would come to transpire, but you knew big things were ahead. And its hard to imagine unfolding any other way than it did, much like this album.
Absolutely indescribable
