Album Review

A condensed version of the 2005 Rick James Gold collection, The Definitive Collection trims the fat found on Gold and leaves a nice balance between his most well-known hits and some of his most acclaimed production work with other artists. Definitive wastes no time getting into the goods either, starting with the one-two punch of "You and I" and his ode to herbal jazz cigarettes, "Mary Jane." The goods are chronologically arranged, and it's not until the middle of the disc that James' most well-known anthems — "Super Freak, Pt. 1" and "Give It to Me Baby" — are found. But it's not only his recordings that make Definitive so accessible for casual fans; his production work with Teena Marie, Smokey Robinson, and the Temptations (all included here) will sound instantly recognizable to anyone who listened to R&B radio during the '80s. Lacking any sort of deep cuts, collectors and die-hard fans will most likely already own everything here. But casual fans looking for all the hits would be well served in using this as a starting point to explore further, as Definitive has all the hits and then some.

Cocaine is a helluva drug...

And Rick James is a hell of a musician. His sounds was extremely gangsta well before the help and era of samples and beat machines. He should be remembered as the genius musician he was and not for the destructive lifestyle he lived. If you're old enough, this will take you back to them days in the hood when your momma was cooking them "welfare-burgers." If you're not old enough, then it a terrific way to discover true musicianship from a man who created his own style and sound from the ground up. Pimp-a-licous. X

Too good, too good...

Rick is the King of funk. No one is making music like this anymore. No one. Big up to "X" and his review. The title made me laugh, homie!

This really isn't his "Definitive Collection"

The album is missing some songs that should've been on here, one major hit being "Ghetto Life", which boggles my mind because it was one of the "super hits" that Rick James made along with Mary Jane, Super Freak, and Give It to Me Baby. Even so, it's a great album, even if it is missing some of his work.

In the late '70s, when the fortunes of Motown Records seemed to be flagging, Rick James came along and rescued the company, providing funky hits that updated the label's style and saw it through into the mid-'80s. Actually, James had been with Motown earlier, though nothing had come of it. After growing up in Buffalo and running away to join the Naval Reserves, he ran away from the Navy to Toronto, where he was in a band with future Buffalo Springfield members Neil Young...
