Album Review
2006's The Definitive Collection replaces 1996's Greatest Hits as the best available single-disc Buddy Holly collection on the market, and it replaces 1985's From the Original Master Tapes as the best single-disc Buddy Holly CD yet released. At 26 tracks, it's eight songs longer than the 1996 set and six songs longer than the 1985 set, so it's more comprehensive than either of the previous discs, adding such strong relative obscurities as "Midnight Shift" to the standard hits that form the bulk of this collection. Listeners who want a more thorough retrospective should turn to 2005's double-disc Gold, which is nearly twice as long, but The Definitive Collection has all of Holly's major songs — "That'll Be the Day," "Words of Love," "Not Fade Away," "Everyday," "Oh Boy!," "Peggy Sue," "Maybe Baby," "Rave On," "Well...All Right," and "Think It Over," among others — in one thoroughly entertaining package, which makes it a terrific overview and introduction of one of the greatest rockers in history.

You don’t have to be Texan
For a while I had been on the search for a decent Buddy Holly compilation, and then I came across this recently-released collection. In short, it’s the best album I have bought in a long time! Every song is enjoyable. All his well-known hits are of course here, and if that’s all you know of Holly’s work (as it was for me until I got this collection) you’re in for a treat. If you like the famous songs you’ll probably like the others, too - they all shine with Buddy Holly’s talent. Even though these recordings are nigh on fifty years old they do not sound dated at all. These well-crafted, spirited songs (and performances) are timeless. If you even think you MIGHT like Buddy Holly, get this. You won’t be disappointed.
Buddy Holly Rocks! and here's why......
I just love Buddy Holley's music. His songs are simple, direct, accessable, and honest. Can you play E, A and C chords on a guitar? Then you can play a lot of Busddy's songs yourself. What's beautiful about Buddy's music is his straightforward approach to his songs. You can just see Texas kids in 1958 two-stepping to Buddy's rock 'n' roll. He's not deep or esoteric. You can easily see why bands like The Beatles took their approach to rock 'n' roll as defined by Buddy Holly. Buddy's music helped define what rock 'n' roll is all about. Sure the hits are here. But dig a little deeper. All of Buddy's songs are well-crafted and played with great energy and spirit by Buddy and the Crickets. Buddy's later recordings when he moved to New York show what Buddy might have become in terms of songwriting, arranging, and playing. Buddy's career was tragically cut short in a plane crash in 1959 that also killed J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson and Ritchie Valens, another amazing rock 'n' roll talent who shared Buddy's affinity for great songwriting and great guitar playing.
:)
The best of the best, rock on Buddy!
