Album Review

Heretofore, Broadway star Idina Menzel has not shown much interest in merging her stage career with her solo recording career, following her featured role in Rent, for instance, with Still I Can't Be Still, an album of original compositions in an Alanis Morissette mold. But after winning the Tony Award for her starring role in Wicked, she re-creates her signature song from that show, "Defying Gravity," on this 41-minute, six-track CD maxi-single. Her "Single Version" is preceded by five remixes, all of which lift her vocal off the track and combine it with the usual relentless beats and synthesizer patterns. "Hani's Flying So High Club Mix" really only sprinkles a few of Menzel's lines in, while the "Funky Junction & Anthony Reale Club Mix" uses quite a lot of it, high in the mix. By the time Menzel's own Glen Ballard-produced version appears at the end, it seems rather tame, but at least gives a sense of what the song is about rather than serving as an excuse to create anonymous dance tracks. (This disc contains a note reading, "Single version from the forthcoming Idina Menzel album," but when Menzel's next album, I Stand, was released in early 2008, "Defying Gravity" was not on it.)

Absolutely Breath-taking

Defying Gravity is an uplifting song about breaking away from limits and releasing yourself to prove that anything can happen. It was originally a song in the musical Wicked, and Idina Menzel released her own single of the song. Her version is as great as the original, and now DJ's took the liberty to remake this amazing song into their own beats with Idina's vocals. 1.) Defying Gravity (Tracy Young's Flying Monkey's Club Mix) - This remix has beats that are soothing and at the same time will make you want to dance. Tracy Young did a really great job retaining the uplifting feel of the song. 5/5 2.) Defying Gravity (Eddie Baez Club) - This remix is similar to the Tracy Young remix, but the beats are not as hard. The strings in this song are amazing. 5/5 3.) Defying Gravity (Funky Junction & Antony Reale Club Mix) - This remix uses a combination of relaxing strings with hard club beats and slightly edited vocals. I like this remix the best; it's absolutely breathtaking. 5/5 4.) Defying Gravity (Hany Flying So High Club Mix) - Hani does a good job with the club beats and modern eastern sounds. This remix will take you to a another world of sounds and rhythms. 5/5 5.) Defying Gravity (Josh Harris Vocal Club Mix) - This remix delivers a nice club sound with some strings. Josh Harris uses many odd beats that work in his favor in making a nice remix. 5/5 Critics feel that remixes "ruin a perfectly good song" or "turns good songs into techno." I think it's sad that DJs work so hard in remaking a beautiful track just so it can be shot down by people who are afraid of a new sound for a classic song. These remixes do NOT ruin Defying Gravity; It's just another version of it, some might say. Don't listen to others by quickly concluding that these remixes butcher the song. Be "through accepting limits 'cuz someone says they're so!"

Spend $0.99 on the one good remix

As an album, these five remixes sound all too similar. The one good remix out of the five is the one by Funky Junction & Antony Reale, which takes Idina's original song to a more exhilirating level: it takes out the emotion and brings in the funk. It's great. The other four songs, however, fail to play off the original song's powerful melody and leave you longing for more.

It's funny...

It's really entertaining reading all the reviews. The fact of the matter is only buy this album if you like techno/trance music. People claim that this is butchering a classic, but in all reality its just expanding its horizons. If you like techno/trance then buy this, its definately worth it. If you like classic music then please stay away, since this is obviously not for you, even though some people still stupidly bought it expecting a DJ remix album to not be techno or have a beat. I mean c'mon.
