Album Review

Sounding like a gang of snotty pop antagonists, Del Amitri came out swinging on this quirky and often brilliant debut. Vocalist Justin Currie's lyrics were intelligent and witty, laced with sarcasm and venom. With jaunty rhythms and quirky melodies, calling them the bastard sons of XTC and Elvis Costello would not have been too far off the mark. Highlights include "Sticks and Stones Girl" and "Hammering Heart." ~ Steve "Spaz" Schnee, Rovi

The perfect acoustic shoe-gazer.

I was 16 when this album came out and it was perfect timing. It's angst-ridden but somehow funny. It's clever and also just plain teen-aged. It was angry and, at the same time, soothing. It's brilliantly written and played. It's was like nothing I had heard before. When the next Del Amitri album came out a few years later I was really let down. I never cared much at all for any of their other stuff. This album wasn't made to be sold... their later stuff was. This was their debut and their peak. Too bad, really, but at least we have it. It is an obscure but vital part of any 80's music collection. It was the pre-cursor to so many of the northern English/ Scottish shoe-gazer rock and the acoustic/ vocal harmony stuff like The Woodentops, The Housemartins, etc. Buy it. Have it. Love it.

Beautiful music, great lyrics, interesting songs

I first bought this album the year it came out, and its hard to believe how good it is. Incredibly smart, moving lyrics, beautiful guitars, unconventional song structures... it makes me remember going to see these guys live in London at the Marquee Club and other fun memories (where the "Special Guest" was Bob Dylan and the Libyans, ie Del Amitri in costume, and where they played Prince's Purple Rain, I think it was, for an encore). But really I would love this album even without all that. Try "Former Owner" or "Deceive Yourself," but really they're all wonderful. This band changed direction dramatically after this, with mixed results, but this album is pure magic.

Del Amitri

First time I listened to this album I was stunned into silence. It was as if the band was saying "we have these instruments and these voices. Let us show you what we can do." And they did. "Keepers" is my favorite song of this or any of their albums. It segued from "Crows in The Wheat Field" so on first listen they blend a bit. The lyrics are so clever and as they are Scottish, an American listener must pay close attention to get the full meaning. So brilliant and under appreciated. Fantastic in a live performance. Snuff

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Del Amitri's easy blend of Beatlesque pop and country-rock has made them a worldwide road and radio staple since the mid-'80s. Formed in Scotland in 1982 by bassist/vocalist/songwriter Justin Currie and longtime guitarist and collaborator Ian Harvie, the duo released Sense Sickness on a small Glasgow indie label the following year. Through heavy touring and positive word of mouth, the band — which now included drummer Paul Tyagi and guitar player Bryan Tolland — managed to impress the...
