Album Review
In 1978, when Los Lobos were paying their bills by playing weddings and Mexican restaurants in the greater Los Angeles area, they put out an independent album of their traditional Tex-Mex songs with a pumped-up rock & roll feel. The album, Del Este de Los Angeles, established their sound and provided a jumping-off point for David Hidalgo and Louie Pérez to start writing their own material. The LP has since been released by Hollywood Records on CD (not to be confused with their similarly titled box set Just Another Band from East L.A.) and is an interesting glimpse into the band on the verge of breaking away from their traditional roots and pushing into creating their own influential style.
Customer Reviews
Great versions of traditional songs
This album is upbeat, fun and very well played. It's become one of my all time favorites. I never owned any other Los Lobos before this.
Del Este de Los Angelas
There is something elegant and fascinating in these simple but extraordinarily beautiful songs. Rarely has an album touched me, put a smile on my face, put me at peace and brought joy in such an unexpected way. I first listened to "Sabor a Mi" , "La Feria de las Flores" , and "El Cuchipe" in the compilation album "Just another Band From East L.A." I found myself puting Disc one of that album on to put me to sleep. There was something very calming and intoxicating in listening to those songs when I went to sleep, As I listened to the music it literally intoxicated me and put me in such a joyous state that I can only describe it as ecstasy. Which brings me to this album. I purchased it in hopes of finding more gems like the three songs i mentioned earlier. Wow! The words fail me in my regards to this one of best albums I have ever heard. I have a special place in my heart for "La Feria de las Flores". One day I played that song to my father in hopes that he knew of it and to see what he thought of it. When he heard it, I was stunned his eyes glazed and he proceeded to tell me that yes he knew the song and what can only be described as unexpected, proceeded to tell me that "La Feria de las Flores" was my grandfathers favorite song. And in another unexpected twist we passed the house that my grandfather lived in that I was unaware was his. This happened as I first played the song to my father. I was in total shock and felt that my grandfather was with us at that moment. I know this sounds like a bad movie. But since that moment I have come to appreciate my culture and have been invigorated to learn more about the music that my ancestors listened to. I have Los Lobos to thank for this. This album is pure gold for me and I hope to pass it to my son and maybe he will one day fall in love with this beautiful album.. Thanks Lobos JM
"El Pescado Nadador" is a beautiful song !!!
and very good singing too !!!
