Album Review

Radney Foster's first album since dissolving the much-missed Foster & Lloyd duo is a tribute to the songwriter's coming of age in small-town Texas and all the musical baggage that stowed aboard for the ride. On many of the tracks, Foster seems a little too conscious of wanting to deliver a pure country effort. The songs are solid, but there's a slight archival feel to the result. I admit that personal biases may be at work here, having been a Foster & Lloyd fan, but it's the more contemporary hybrids that strike me as the disc's best moments. The gutsy "A Fine Line," the infectious "Nobody Wins" (with Mary Chapin Carpenter on background vocals, ) and the gospelly country-rocker "Hammer and Nails" are worth the price of admission alone.

One of the First Country CD's I ever bought--and GREAT!

I think I'd heard "Nobody Wins," but was at a point in my life where I wanted to escape Rock. I bought this and was blown away. Lousiana Blue and Closing Time are two heartbreak songs that should put Radney Foster in some Hall of Fame or another--all by themselves. I can honestly say there's only one song I don't absolutely love--and it's okay. This album is as good as anything you can buy. If you're not a country fan and just want some music that relates to a blue period of your life, this is a perfect choice. It never made me want to drink, but I think I got all the "benefits" without the alcohol.

A must have!!

When it comes to albums, it just doesn't get much better than this. I bought this again because my CD is shot after 15 years of abuse. Strange but a lot of people have never even heard of Radney. Although, when they hear him they always love his music.
