Album Review

The Delta Meets Detroit: Aretha's Blues is one of the few non-hits compilations that makes sense. Selecting 16 tracks from her Atlantic recordings, the disc spotlights Franklin at her bluesiest — there are no hits here, but there's also no shortage of remarkable songs, either, as "Today I Sing the Blues," "Night Life," "Night Time Is the Right Time," "Good to Me As I Am to You," "Going Down Slow," "Drown in My Own Tears," and "Dr. Feelgood (Love Is a Serious Business)" rank among her grittiest performances. If you're only familiar with the hits, this is an excellent way to dig deeper into her catalog, and if you already have this material on their original albums, The Delta Meets Detroit actually offers some revelations you may not have expected.

Customer Reviews

for the true aretha fans, essential

Having belted out all the greatest hits and collected various albums on vinyl I have to admit, as a young person who found the Queen after her time, this is where I find my juiciest tracks now. "Today I Sing the Blues", "Going Down Slow" and "Dr Feelgood" are my current AF faves. If you love the deep richness which is her voice and supreme delivery, don't miss these selections.

Superior Recordings of a Great Modern Western Artist

How could I not know? I have all these songs by Ms. Franklin on vinyl, cassette, cd, and in digital files, but did not know this album exists until 2011.
These are very good to great recordings. I especially appreciate Ms. Franklin's best recordings of "Today I Sing the Blues", and "Night Life" are included, rather than lesser quality versions.
The inclusion of her rendition of "Ain't No Way" would have made this album perfect. Thank you, iTunes, Rhino, Warner, Atlantic, and, most of all, ..... thank you, Ms. Aretha Franklin.

Aretha Franklin is one of the giants of soul music, and indeed of American pop as a whole. More than any other performer, she epitomized soul at its most gospel-charged. Her astonishing run of late-'60s hits with Atlantic Records — "Respect," "I Never Loved a Man," "Chain of Fools," "Baby I Love You," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Think," "The House That Jack Built," and several others — earned her the title "Lady Soul," which she has worn uncontested ever since. Yet as much of an international...
