Another huge step forward for wizard rock

It's hard to adequately write a review for the latest album from The Whomping Willows, "Demons at the Helm" because I'm afraid of not doing it justice. Many casual fans of wizard rock enjoy that genre of music for what it is - an often tounge in cheek look at the world of Harry Potter, seen through the eyes of song. The Whomping Willows are one of the few bands to actually make a career out of wrock, and it's reflected in the subject matter and musical styles shown in "Demons". Sometimes melancholy, many times introspective, and always looking forward, this may be the most "mature" wizard rock album to date and will most likely spawn a whole slew of "meta-wizard rock" releases - music about the fandom and community, but not necessarily about the subject matter in the books. The music itself ranges from rock to bluegrass to quiet folk to near-showtunes, and will provide any fan of good music a satisfying ride. Standouts include "A Heart Can Change", "Don't Let Me Explode", and "A Brief Repose". But much like all of their releases, this is meant to be listened to start-to-finish. Buy it all, prepare to sing along, and enjoy.

Deviating from the usual, this doesn't disappoint

Matt Maggiacomo took a risky step with this album. Whereas most wizard rock albums are songs based on the events of the Harry Potter books, and this is what most wrock fans have come to expect, the Whomping Willows' newest album chronicles Matt's experiences within the Harry Potter community and, more specifically, with wizard rock. While some people might be turned off by this, people should give this album a listen. Even apart from the wizard rock genre, this album stands out. With "Demons at the Helm", Matt Maggiacomo proves that he could have a career as a "Muggle" musician. The songs are well written and performed, and you don't need to know a whole lot about Harry Potter to follow them (but you should!). It's definitely something that you should check out, whether you're a wrocker or not.

Whompy and the Magic of Music

Demons At The Helm is a pretty heavy title for a pretty heavy record. This is not an album for your shallow bubble gum pop types. In which Matt Maggiacomo truly wears his heart on his sleeve, and the Whomping Willow had apparently been holding in his feelings for ages. The two of them come together and spill their souls in a magnificent work of Wizard Rock art. I recommend this album to wrock fans, Willows fans, and muggles alike. It's simply the kind of album that suits your mood when you don't even know what kind of mood you're in. It's deep. It's honest. It's real. My only beef is that I can't decide whether it feels like Whompy's soul is washing over me with tsunami like force, or if the Willow is trying to pull me by the feet into its very depths and encase me in its own emotion. Either way, it's absolutely consuming. Buy this album, put it on, and loose yourself in a mixture of emotion and magic that you won't find anywhere else.
