Customer Reviews
extremely original
The ten songs on this album really take you into more places than you’ll be able to count, all with the unique stylistic consistency Wallace has always shown in his work. This is an amazing album with brilliant musicianship (the guitar on “Look at Me” is inspired and just brutally great) and fantastic songs (musically and lyrically).
Strange, Great
What a strange album this is. Dan shreds like an 80s metal guitarist on "Look at Me," sings in French on the orchestrally tinged "Go Away," does a sort of Freak Folk thing on "Morceau," goes folky and techno electronic on "Fell (For Two Musicians and a Computer)" (oh, and shreds on that one too), and sings about witches on the piano ballad closing number "Fever." There's also a sappy Christmas song, and some other stuff I don't have time to try to categorize. But, at the heart of this - let's face it - mess of an album, resides great songwriting and musicianship. This album seems to be the work of a brilliant talent being pulled in more directions than he can handle. It's worth buying even if just to witness his struggle.
For the fans
While there are a few songs on here I think people new to Wallace would love (Fell, Fever, probably Look at Me and Go Away), I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this as the place to start listening. Go in this CD order: Reattachment, Neon and Gold, Culture of Self, Den of Maniacs… by the time you get to DoM, you’ll get what he’s doing it and it will be awesome!
