Album Review

Styx was only a year in the grave before lead singer Dennis DeYoung ventured out on his own with his solo debut, Desert Moon. The solo record does not represent a significant stylistic departure from Styx's brand of pop/rock, although the emphasis is heavier on the pop and not as heavy on the rock. DeYoung continues his gut-busting vocal strategy, belting out his notes. The singer also supplies the keyboards, of which there are plenty — this is a mid-'80s record, after all. Tom Dziallo handles the wailing electric guitars and arranged the cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Fire." The album yielded a Top Ten hit in "Desert Moon."

-=- First SOLO Album from DDY -=-

If you are here because you are a Styx fan, welcome. This disc will not disappoint. The video for Desert Moon was a staple on MTV in 1984. It was a great song. Don't Wait For Heros is an excellent, upbeat song that encourages you to follow your dreams (DDY's solo album, perhaps) and to believe in yourself. This theme is sadly missing from much of the music that is 'popular' in today's society. DDY also has an interesting remake of 'Fire' by Jimi Hendrix. It seems as though A & M made DDY and Tommy Shaw follow a similar pattern on their solo albums, both contain duets with rather unknown female artists (Please). The actual album was excellent and still maintains its greatness. What it is missing is the rest of the guys from Styx. There is really only one song that does not seem to belong here: Boys Will Be Boys. Given DDY's love and commitment to his wife, it seems a bit out of place...

So many great songs. One miss.

This gets 5 stars because of the title song. A classic in every sense of the word. The big miss is Boys Will be Boys. Otherwise a solid solo effort from DeYoung. The vocal pyrotechnics on Fire will make you realize what an amazing singer this guy really was and still is. Don't Wait for Heroes should have been a big, big hit, along with Desert Moon (which was the only solo effort from a Styx member to be a hit). The duet on Please is first rate.

Desert Moon Rocks

Desert Mooon was released in 1984 and as the first release by Dennis DeYoung, it rocked. The only song that was out of place was Boys Will Be Boys! Wish I had seen fire released. Otherwise it rocked~
