Chris Staples: Again, I Can Get Lost in Sound
by
Matthew D. S.
Painfully aware that I have only listened to the two available songs on this forthcoming album, I prematurely declare its excellence. The compositions maintain a live sound in these recordings, and the arrangements are clean, catchy and, at times, are definitely reminiscent of Staples' wonderful Discover America album.
Staples apparently spent a lengthy period of time putting this album together, so I can only expect more quality tracks when the entire album is released. For now, this is a delectable, slim slice of the cake.
"What you think you want and what it turns out to be / you hadn't lived long enough to know it ain't the same thing / it ain't the same thing"
For those not familiar with Staples' music, his writing abilities are top-notch. His punchy words are often the passengers to captivating melodies. He stirs the paint just enough to watch the separate colors loudly clash. The listener can appreciate this open space, and long to hear the refrains time and time again.
"Digging your way out / digging your way out / digging your way out / you're scratching me all up"
If you'd like a storyteller with a mind for building catchy tunes, you'll enjoy Chris Staples. He'll even let you fill in some of the blanks with his general prose. I've already made this my own.
