Incredible
This is by far one of my favorite CDs. Gil Shaham is a wonderful violinist, but this, in my eyes, is his best work. The violin has always been thought of as a "devil's instrument," which is why so many violinists have "devil" CDs out. This selection is excellent, and is filled with songs with a real history. For example, Giuseppe Tartini had a dream that the devil was perched at the foot of his bed playing the violin. Tartini said that when he woke up that he tried to copy the song he heard the devil play as best he could, but the true song was lost. What Tartini copied later became the "Devil's Trill" Sonata, which is found on this CD.
In Line With the Devil's Pinky
The Danse Macabre shows signs of the subterranian level of hell, though Shaham could dig a little deeper by means of not crashing into the string with as much bow pressure. What can sometimes portray the dark but majestic qualities of "devil's" music is a clean tone where the minor key and tritones speak for themselves. Otherwise great! Shaham is yet another master.
BRAVO!
stunning mix of work. dark, beautiful, romantic.
