Album Review

This compilation, released concurrently with Greatest Hits, collects some of the band's stranger experiments, early album tracks, and a few rarities, such as the Booji Boy releases of "Be Stiff" and "Mechanical Man" (both available on the Hardcore compilations) and a U.K. B-side, "Penetration in the Centerfold." It does serve as a good supplement to the Greatest Hits collection, even if it is a bit haphazard, but listeners who want more than one Devo disc are advised to go ahead and purchase the first three albums rather than these two compilations — it's a better way to appreciate their achievements, and it's more entertaining.

not quite up to 4 track demos

some great tunes on here. i love "mechanical man", "penetration in the centerfold", and "shrivel up". but....these seem like a taste of what seems to go on for days on the fabled ryko "4 track demos" double album, a long lost reissue, perhaps never to resurface above ground again. the crude humor and dissonant squelching on this comp does reflect the side of devo i like best, but prior to signing with the majors, that's all these guys did for years and years out in ohio. that sarcastic, snotty, lewd cyberpunk and noise contained on "4 track demos" is some of my favorite music under the odd banner "rock music".

Not quite what it could be as a comp, but still worthwhile

This compilation does capture the more experimental, satirical side of Devo fairly well, but the odd thing about it is that nearly all the album tracks here are from their first two albums. So, despite the fact that this is supposed to be a companion piece to Greatest Hits, if you've got that album and want more, I'd reccomend going straight to Are We Not Men? or Duty Now For The Future. That said, counting the booji boy versions of Jocko Homo and Satisfaction, there's a good five tracks on here you're probably not going to find anywhere else, and "Be Stiff", "Mechanical Man" and "Penetration In The Centerfold" are all must haves.

how are these "greatest misses"? the majority of these songs are fantastic! for the greatest misses it should be more of their 90s stuff like "disco boy" now those are the bad ones
