iTunes Review

Richard Buckner's second album turns quieter and more reflective than his tuneful debut Bloomed. Less countrified, Buckner brings things to a whisper and rarely a scream as he catalogs the ups and downs of love, the seductive promise of soul-defining infatuation, the sad delusions that often follow, and the sadness that surrounds his eventual failures. (He'd been recently divorced). But this eternal romantic sings with a weary grace that makes his every observation sound like a road worth taking. He never gives in to despair but instead determines to turn his sad luck into illuminating and very private songs. Some of Buckner's most enduring tunes are here and the bare production often makes it feel as if one is eavesdropping on the proceedings. "Pull, " "Lil Wallet Picture," "A Goodbye Rye," and "Song of 27," with their mix of simple folk chords and spare, country pedal-steel guitar sweeps, create an idiosyncratic Americana that sound like a young Californian dreamer who's read his share of young Jack Kerouac. And then there's the a cappella "Fater" that strips things to the barest essential of all.

one of the best cds i have ever bought

this cd is in the alt country genre, but like so many great musical releases, it is really beyond a simple classification. d&d is a moody voyage, in which the notes delivered are sparse, but each one infinitely valuable & well measured. country? alt country? i'm not sure... it might be more apt to classify this album based on its lyrical content. the songwriting is that good... lines that cut to the bone delivered in a haunting atmosphere. in my opinion, this is far and away buckner's masterpiece.

Can I say underappreciated?

I'm continually amazed that Richard Buckner is flying under the radar. He's been around putting out great albums since 1994, and yet almost anytime I bring his name up in a discussion of music, people say, "Richard Buckner? Who's that?". I suppose I wouldn't have discovered him either if not for a classmate in grad school a few years back who lent me a copy of Bloomed and said I should "listen to what this guy has to say". I'm glad I did. I bought Devotion + Doubt one night and sat at the computer by myself so I could just lean back in the chair and take this one in. By the time 30 seconds had passed into the first track, Pull, I was smiling from ear to ear. By the end of the second track, Lil Wallet Picture, I was in tears. Upon finishing the album I was simply floored. This man is a gem. The thing is, Bloomed got better every time I listened to it for the first couple of years I had it. If Devotion + Doubt has the same effect, it might just become my favorite album ever.

Lonely and Beautiful

Deceptively understated. Incredible delivery.

Biography

Born: 1967 in San Francisco, CA

Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

This husky-voiced country-folk singer/songwriter is very much in the mold of the Lubbock, Texas, school of mavericks, including Butch Hancock, Terry Allen, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Richard Buckner is actually based in San Francisco, but the Lubbock connection is no accident. His debut album, Bloomed, was recorded in Lubbock, for one thing, with producer Lloyd Maines, who has also worked with Hancock, Allen, Joe Ely, and Uncle Tupelo. Maines himself plays several instruments on the...
