excellent live recording
This is a very enjoyable recording. The orchestra sounds great and Bartok's music speaks for itself. Dudamel doesn't try to do anything unusual with the piece, he just leads it well. The orchestra is recorded well and the excitement of the live performance comes through. There are minor ensemble issues as always happens with live recordings, but it doesn't distract from the great performance.
Decent but not their best effort
The LA Phil plays well on this live concert recording, but I don't think it's near their best playing based on CDs I have heard from them. The interpretation is to my ears quite middle of the road and does not project to me much personality and viewpoint -- it's solid but does not catch my imagination. The tempo of the freaky little fugue right before the coda of the finale is slower than I've ever heard it and seems to sap the energy of the finale. In the game of the pairs I could have used much more phrasing and creativity by the pairs of instruments -- they just sort of sat there and did nothing special though they played cleanly. This tells me that the musicians are still figuring out Dudamel's musical mind, that they have not gotten a clear idea of what is trying to do, or that he just is not doing much. The sound is ok, but not great. The basses are coming through strongly which is a real plus in this piece. The winds and horns sound quite distant in comparison to everyone else. As for the Dudamel debut, I expected a more electric performance based on what I had heard about him. But what I heard was a solid but somewhat immature interpretation. I don't doubt that LA and Dudamel can possibly develop an exciting relationship, but I don't hear it in this concert. Time will tell. Congrats to LA for putting this on Itunes, it's great to be able to hear for oneself rather than have to rely on all the superficial media hoopla. For a recent Bartok Concerto try the Philadelphia Eschenbach recording -- it has more punch and atmosphere (I liked Eschenbach's Bartok but did not like at all his Tchaikovsky 5 and Mahler 6 also recently released). If you know this piece well, you'll be disappointed; all others will be fairly satisfied.
Wonderful!!
Great playing. One of my favorites. Dudamel does a wonderful job of conducting also.
