Beethoven as he's meant to be played
Finally! After years of too-polite, Mozart-inflected, physically absent, undramatic Beethoven that we've had to endure from others, Maestro Salonen and the LA Philharmonic give us a live recording of the 5th that will stand comparison with any other. This is ballsy, muscular, histrionic, loud Beethoven, exactly as he should be. You can hear audience members gasping and sobbing during the quieter passages, where Salonen allows every inner voice to be heard (so don't think for a moment that his reading is at all unsubtle), and their reaction after the finale is appropriately ecstatic. The only way in which this recording leaves the rest of us wanting is by making us wish we'd been there, as the sense of occasion that Salonen and his orchestra achieve is positively palpable. The bonus: amazing acoustics and a vivid soundstage. Awe-inspiring in every way.
Beethoven Symphony #5
Live, this performance of the 5th was eye opening. Having attended many performances of this piece over the years, it had lost some of its original luster for me. This performance makes it new again with a thrillingly nuanced presentation shot through with emotional energy, yet maintaining a precision that would satisfy any purist. Under Salonen, The LA Philharmonic has truly become a world class orchestra again.
GREAT PERFORMANCE
The La Philharmonic is one of the top Orchestras in the World. Glad to see them on the cutting edge with immediate releases of performances. Check out the John Williams Clarinet Concerto with Principal Clarinetist of LA Michele Zukovsky as Soloist on Itunes.
