Strong Salonen, Very Good Sibelius

Solid, strong recording of LAPhil live at Disney. Recorded sound is very good, clear, detailed, well balanced, good differentiation of instruments in ensemble, and a fair sense of depth of stage. Immediate up front sound can be exciting (it is enough so here) but somehow I'm not thrilled, only very impressed, which is plenty good enough, but don't expect to be wowed. Salonen's interpretation seems more studied than intuitively felt - he admits he has had an ambivalent relationship with his country's greatest, dominant musical persona, and so it seems, with tempi, phrasing, timbre (sound "color" or shading) carefully judged. I go from being excited one minute, reverently observant the next, appreciative of Salonen's care and judgment; at last I'm not satisfyingly touched. In this most familiar of Sibelius' symphonies, I think one should be touched emotionally, deeply touched, and it doesn't quite happen here. The orchestra's virtuosity is thrilling and precision and balance performance go more right than usual even in a studio recording. Fine acoustics of Disney Hall do all parties (incl the composer) handsomely. I'd definitely buy this as a second recording (or a third or fourth) but I think if you start here you would do yourself a favor acquiring another, A-list recording. You'll find plenty in these pages and the more you get the more you'll like.

Sibelius Symphony 2

This new installment in the wonderful series of live performances by the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen offers a massive, slow, majestic and somewhat episodic interpretation of Sibelius Second Symphony. All of the anticipated Salonen virtues are present, including great power in the ascent of this piece to the heavens, but the interpretation ultimately falls short of the very best because, ironically, in Salonen's very quest for the long-line he loses sight of the destination. This problem also dogged the DG Sibelius symphony series that Leonard Bernstein recorded late in his life. There are many wonderful things to enjoy in this reading--particularly the beautiful playing of the LA Philharmonic and the great sonic balance of Disney Hall, but I can not recommend this performance as enthusiastically as other installments in the LA/Salonen series. However for $5.99 this is well worth hearing. For a performance for the ages try to find the earlier Bernstein/Nwe York Philharmonic cycle.

Very good, salonen is getting stronger and stronger at the podium

Salonen is the perfect exponent for Sibelius-both of the same heritage and much of Salonen's excellent compositions distantly echo the "Beethoven of the North." This is a wonderful juxtaposition to Colin Davis' LSO release earlier this year. Also, dont pay attention to anything the so called "John Williams Clarinet Concerto Producer" writes-aa brief survey of his reviews reveals he is nothing more than a stool critic planted by some company--Itunes really shouldnt allow it to continue. In summary, Salonen is now one of the most exciting and authoritative conductors in the world today-better so because he is heading one of the finest orchestra's in America(mostly thanks to his leadership)--His natural affinity for this music is obvious as is his virtuosic command over his idiom. For those who want to hear good accessible modern music-check out his compositions as well---they are like a mix of stravinsky, sibelius, bartok, and messiaen. He is a considerable figure to head to the future of our beloved music.
