iTunes Review

Though Sunny Day Real Estate have often been credited with spearheading and popularizing the “emo” movement in mainstream music during the ‘90s, it’s a bit misleading and unfair to the band’s actual music. Yes, singer Jeremy Enigk can scream with conviction and often does (“In Circles,” “Song About an Angel”) but he’s hardly the first to sing with an overstated sense of theater, and the band is hardly a generic catch-all for all post-punk groups who claimed emo status in the ‘90s. Drummer William Goldsmith was heard to be good enough to take Dave Grohl’s seat when he decided to become the Foo Fighters’ full-time guitarist and singer, and from there, a majestic and fully formed group is on hand. The recording is raw and relentless on this 1994 debut, sometimes making the playing seem a bit sloppier than it actually is. However, everything that made Sunny Day Real Estate one of the decade’s most notable bands is here (“47,” “The Blankets Were the Stairs“). Is it emo? Does it matter?

Sunny Day Real Estate's Diary: the original emo

Out of all of my hundred's of emo/alternative albums that I own, I would have to say this Album and this band are Clearly the best. Every Single Song on this album is significant in it's only special way, and It is what true emo music is all about. The First song, Seven, is a great emo song that brings the genre to life. The Third song, Song about an Angel, is a Beautiful Ballad that Is so well played out and written, You would be wrong not to buy this album for it. Than Phuerto Skuerto, a Strange Song of Only Bass And Piano. There is not a bad song on this album, and this Artist is, In my Opinion, One of the best of all time. Sunny Day Real Estate, the Godfathers of emo. P.S. Best Album art ever too! Definetly check out the song Seven, my favorite song of all time! - Chris Alden

Not What You Expect

A lot of people talk about how Sunny Day Real Estate has influenced almost every band that's been called emo since the release of this album, so I was expecting some really generic sounding music. Needless to say I was totally blown away the second I put this CD on. You can tell that basically every mainstream band since the mid 90's wants so badly to be Sunny Day when you listen to this CD, but Sunny Day's sound is their own. And it's not just their sound that is original, it's the feeling you get when you hear them. Anyone can remake their sound, but they won't get the same response from an audience.

THE BEST RECORD OF THE 1990'S!!

This is one of the best records ever put out. The drums are awesome, intricate at moments then frantic at others. Jeremy's vocals are beautiful, his voice is unique and takes some time to get used to. The lyrics are very, very good. The guitars keep up with the drums and fit with the bass. He really puts a lot of emotion into his vocals. This is emo, not grunge. This sounds nothing like Nirvana. The melodies are much slower and linger more. Machina is wrong. This is emotional music at its finest. Tell me if there is a pop genre then. SDRE are the grandfathers of emo and most bands have borrowed from them. Diary is a awesome record, not one bad song on here, full of bitterness and anger, best band next to Nirvana

Biography

Formed: 1992 in Seattle, WA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Considering their relatively brief existence, Sunny Day Real Estate racked up enough dramatic twists and turns to rank with some of the great rock soap operas. Its key members have engaged in just about every rock cliché imaginable, including finding religion, refusing to work with the media, breaking up, and joining a big-name group, and even recording an ambitious full-orchestra pop album; all before reuniting in 1997. Although they formed in 1992 amid the burgeoning hard rock scene in Seattle...
