Best album of the year

If you love Oasis, The Verve, Travis, Johnny Marr you will love this album. Nothing will top Oasis but this has the ballads and the swagger we've come to expect. America isn't going to embrace this album, but I know there are fans over here that will love it. This is still OUR band. I'll come out and say it, I dont care for "Bring The Light" but the rest of the songs are real top drawer. Four Letter Word is the ultimate rocker and perfect to open up the album, and should be the next James Bond theme song. Millionaire is a nice song that no doubt sounds inspired by Lennon. The Roller also sounds Lennonesque, it has Instant Karma written all over it, but we dont care. Beatles and Stones is perfect to come next because we know they love the Beatles, and we know they have the same swagger as always professing that they will stand the test of time. Wind up Dream has a nice beat and the band get to show off their guitars as well as the harmonica. For Anyone is no doubt a Liam ballad. There has to be one to woo the ladies. Kill for a dream has some nice lyrics "You say to the driver just drive, cos you never felt so alive". Standing on the Edge of the noise is a loud rock song that sounds amazing. It's the one that in concert will have everyone jumping. Wigwam is funny title and is sort of a slow Liam ballad that proves he has a soft side. Three Ring Circus is one of my favorites on the album, an upbeat song that will have you humming and singing the lyrics over and over. Very catchy tune. The Beat Goes on is another fantastic song with amazing lyrics. It's a ballad and gives you "I'm the last of a dying breed"...a very nice song.."Someday all the world will sing my song" terrific lyric. The album closes with The Morning Son.....an emotional song, the lyrics are so perfect and humble. "He's in my mind, he's in my soul, he's even in my rock and roll" "I stand alone, nobody knows".....and this might even be about brother Noel when he says "Let it be, give it time....you go your way, and I'll go mine".....such a beautiful song.

What an album. Liam, Andy, Gem and Chris have done an amazing job. I've been listening to it non stop for weeks. If you're reading this you know who you are. YOU MUST own this album.

Different Gear, Still Speeding

Let's go back; August 28, 2009, Rock en Siene Festival, Paris, France. 15 minutes before Oasis are about to go on stage. Keep in mind, the band has three more shows and their tour is over. Then those Gallagher brothers start bickering, and Noel, their chief songwriter, finally breaks and walks off, while Liam smashes a few of his brother's guitars. Hence, the end of Oasis.

Two hours later, back in the hotel room, Beady Eye was formed with the remaining members of Oasis, who were usually given a few songs on the last three Oasis LPs, but not enough to see true writing prowess. Liam's writing on Oasis' last four records were very one dimensional; either a two minute rocker (The Meaning of Soul), or a Lennon-esque ballad or two (I'm Outta Time). While bassist Andy Bell and guitarist Gem Archer's tunes seemed to always sound like they were written to try to sound like Oasis, as the two joined in 2000, replacing the two original members. Both Bell and Archer showed talent in thier old bands, Ride and Heavy Stereo, but seemed to be somewhat stinted in Oasis.

But when you listen to Beady Eye's debut LP, "Different Gear, Still Speeding", you finally get a real good look at "the other guys in Oasis".

There's not much difference really in the album compared to an Oasis album as far as influences are concerned. It's always seemed to be Beatles, Stones, Kinks, The Who, and the Sex Pistols. The lead single, "The Roller" has the same charm of "Instant Karma!". "Beatles and Stones" rolls out the "My Generation" viciousness, and "For Anyone" has the Mancunian charm of The La's, just to name a few. But is it so bad to blatantly sound like your idols and influences? I see it as refreshing. They have sucessfully brought back a lost form of rock and roll that was made popular by The Small Faces, The Kinks, and The Yardbirds, but all too forgotten in rock and roll's annals of time. Liam and Beady Eye will always be the same. They are a rock in an otherwise unstable music landscape; a place to go when you want something with dust on it, something you know well and don't have to over think. Today's music sometimes just seems hard to get, or get quickly. This is an enjoyable and easy listen.

This is a bit of a surprising record to me. I was expecting what we usually got in an Oasis record. I was looking forward to getting the hard rock and roll edgy tunes and one or two ballads from Liam, and maybe a few seven minute grooves and a couple mediocre Oasis-esque tunes from Andy and Gem. Except what we got were well thought out and very well written 60's pop songs. Most of the credit, I give to Andy and Gem. Their efforts on the LP are truly significant. And to think, some of the standout songs on the album are left overs from Oasis sessions (The Roller, Standing on The Edge of The Noise). We saw a lot of talent from Liam already with "Born on a Different Cloud" and "Songbird", but what about the other two guys? It kind of makes you wonder what Noel was thinking when he chose the songs he chose to put on Oasis albums. A question, I'm sure, for a later time, presumably when Noel's solo album sees the light of day.

But as for now, that light shines, and shines bright on Beady Eye. The Oasis legacy was always being the last true great rock and roll band of an era. So, if nothing else, Beady Eye carries that legacy, and carries it well.

Thank you, Jesus....

Biography

Formed: 2009 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

British alt-rock outfit Beady Eye formed in 2009, several months after the rivalry between Oasis siblings Liam and Noel Gallagher reached a boiling point at a summer festival, resulting in Noel's departure and the band's dissolution. That fall, Liam and three of his former Oasis bandmates — Gem Archer, Andy Bell, and Chris Sharrock — booked studio time with producer Steve Lillywhite to begin work on a new album, with plans to release the first single under their new moniker...
