Album Review
Amadou & Mariam, the blind couple from Mali, have certainly paid their dues over the last 30 years, and it's about time they received their big break. Certainly given the excellent reviews in Europe, Dimanche a Bamako could be it, thanks to the production and participation by the elf prince of world music, Manu Chao. He brings a playful lightness to their soulful, bluesy Malian sound, letting in plenty of sunshine, and drawing in a sense of place through the ambience of traffic sounds and snippets of conversation. Chao is also obviously present on several tracks, such as "Senegal Fast Food," which offers a bouncy, reggae-styled rhythm so typical of Chao's own records. But even when not so obviously asserting himself, his presence is felt in the space he creates, and the use he makes of Mariam's admittedly limited voice (she's good, but no one will ever mistake her for one of the word's greatest singers), as on "Beau Dimanche," for example. Lyrically, this is very much an album of love songs, postcards between the couple, but it never veers into maudlin sentiment. Yet there's also a political edge to it, such as with "La Realite." Even if you don't understand the words, however, the entire disc is an absolute aural joy, poppy enough to be exquisitely memorable, yet with layers of resonance underneath. Likely to be one of the world music albums of 2005, it can hopefully find the kind of wide audience it surely deserves.

What Is African Pop?
Listen intently and beneath the tarted-up Manu Chao pop production you'll hear where American blues, cajun, and soul came from. Amadou and Mariam display too much depth and heartfelt emotion in their music to call it "pop", but if Chao helps sells records for this deserving couple, so be it. He deserves credit for that. An incredibly great first choice for the African music section of your record selection. You should immediately follow this with Baaba Maal, Salif Keita, and Ali Farka Toure. Highly recommended.
Dimanche a Bamako
I believe that this album is one of the best of its type which I have ever heard!!!Beaux Dimanches is a fantastic song!!! Every song has its' own flavor and each are filled with vitality which is exclusive to world music. I think that music here in the U.S. is severely lacking in true talent...U.S. lyrics are false, contrived, and forced to fit into some cheesy rhyme meter...even witty '(c) rap' songs are synthesized versions of junk that was done decades ago. Amadou & Mariam offer the world a fresh, inviting, comfortable sound. While I don't speak French or any of the West African languages, I thoroughly enjoyed purchasing this album as well as all of their others..I hope to see them in the U.S.A. one day!!! God Bless the 'Blind Couple from Mali!' ALWAYS!!!!!
An Incredible Album
This album is by far one of my favorites of all time. Amadou & Mariam have always been great musicians, but they make absolute magic when joined by Manu Chao. It's funky, it's orginal, it's an instant classic!
