Album Review

Directions is an ambitious song-by-song visual supplement to Death Cab for Cutie's excellent 2005 Plans release. Proposals from around the world were submitted to the band, and a budget was allowed for 13 finalists to create videos that would translate their visions into reality. The results range from the existential and tragic ("Marching Bands of Manhattan," "What Sarah Said") to the innocent and charming. Rob Schrab's animation to "Crooked Teeth" is quite easily the highlight of the disc, and also noteworthy is Autumn DeWilde's interpretation of "Different Names for the Same Thing," which features an elementary school marching band redoing the song in mildly out-of-tune glory. This is definitely something Death Cab fans will enjoy, and a special tip of the cap goes to the bandmembers for allowing their songs to be adopted so idiosyncratically by other people.

From a producer of the project

Hi everyone, I'm Aaron Stewart-Ahn, one of the creators of 'Directions' and director of Stable Song. I just wanted to say that when you purchase these and they go into your iPod, the track order is not preserved where they are put under Videos-Music Videos-Death Cab For Cutie. The order of the videos and songs is very deliberate so my advice to watch these in order would be to make a playlist in the order you see here, or find them in the music part of your iPod, where they are correct. We hope you enjoy the project.

An Excellent Idea BUT

The music of DCfC has so much breathing room for visual interpretations it's amazing. However, I personally would've liked to see other albums get this treatment. While Plans is by no means a poor album, Transatlanticism and their prior albums get me more riled up imagining their videos. Secondly, the videos are all across the board, from brilliant, okay, utterly forgetable, and downright shameful. Soul Meets Body is the most disappointing. For a song with such visual potential, its seems almost sinful to make a "family get-together" movie. I sat there in anticipation waiting for the excitement that never came. Others fail to arouse the senses, and even more try to hard to make literal connections with the lyrics, pretty much spelling out the words for you. That said, there are some stand outs, namely Summer Skin, Someday You Will Be Loved, and Crooked Teeth. A few of them, like Different Names for the Same Thing, Your Heart is an Empty Room, and Stable Song also carry potential, but come up slightly short from reaching their true potential. Despite all my criticisms, this is still a necessary purchase, especially if this your first time hearing Plans. It's execution is a mixed affair, but the "cool-factor" accompanying the idea, attractive price, and the handful of standouts make this an exceptional release.

great fun.

death cab keeps the detailed, almost photographic memory lyrics coming through this onslaught of video imagery. great fun, an enjoyable homegrown sensory overload.

Biography

Formed: 1997 in Bellingham, WA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Death Cab for Cutie's rise from small-time solo project to Grammy-nominated rock band is one of indie rock's greatest success stories. Launched in the bayside college town of Bellingham, Washington, the group was originally a side project for singer/guitarist Ben Gibbard, an engineering student at Western Washington University who split his time between school and music. Taking a break from his local power pop band, Pinwheel, Gibbard began recording an album's worth of solo material during the summer...
