iTunes Review

Produced by Kevin Shirley, who has worked with Aerosmith and the Black Crowes, Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns features slightly upgraded production. Where the previous few Hiatt albums were largely no-frills affairs with the band playing it close to live, Dirty Jeans has the sound of instruments being carefully placed in the mix. This extra care allows Hiatt to deliver his ballads with arrangements that play up their emotional strengths. “Til I Get My Lovin’ Back,” “Don’t Wanna Leave You Now” and especially the 9/11 tribute “When New York Had Her Heart Broke” excel with this added attention to detail. Hiatt already has a voice as real and raw as the open road; it’s nice to give him a little insulation from the raw truths. As a songwriter’s songwriter, Hiatt writes songs that sound as if he’s imagining a million different worlds for them. “I Love That Girl” pounces like a long-lost pop hit. “Adios to California” evokes a sad goodbye to an entire era that sounds like it’s earmarked for Emmylou Harris. Hiatt does it all.

Never Fails

John Hiatt has to be one of the most under rated artists out there. When you listen to this collection, you should be asking - why? Many of his songs have been made popular by other equally great artists (who know a good thing when they hear it), but I always come back to his true soulful voice.

Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns

When you think of Americana, who else comes to mind first than John Hiatt. A songwriter's songwriter. Once again he hits the mark with the right mix of lyric and music. Dark roadhouses and dusty roads, that is the Hiatt highway.

Love him but......

Haven't even listened to it yet but......$10.99 .... really????? Do our favorite artists have to give in and get us also. Why not the normal $9.99 like we're used to. Does everything have to keep killing the common people??? Even the music which until now has kept us going??? I just don't get it.

John Hiatt's sales have never quite matched his reputation. Hiatt's songs were covered successfully by everyone from Bonnie Raitt, Ronnie Milsap, and Dr. Feelgood to Iggy Pop, Three Dog Night, and the Neville Brothers, yet it took him 13 years to reach the charts himself. Of course, it nearly took him that long to find his own style. Hiatt began his solo career in 1974, and over the next decade he ran through a number of different styles from rock & roll to new wave pop before he finally settled...
