Dirty Little Secret

Unmistakably recorded to tape, "Dirty Little Secret" is the new album from this oft-reinvented alternative indie/rock band. A mix of grit and honey, the sound pours out of the speakers like you're in a steam-punk train station under the stained glass windows of a gospel church. Produced by Sean Slade, who also produced albums for the Dresden Dolls, Radiohead, Warren Zevon, and countless others, it also features his chair creaking, something the band couldn't bear to edit out.

Jim Fitting makes a guest appearance on harmonica with Eric Olsson (and assorted keys) on the B3 organ in "Dirty Little Secret," lending it the feel of an old Ray Charles gospel blues record. Special guests, Russ Gershon and Charlie Kohlhase from Either Orchestra, on tenor and barry sax, along with original band members Donny Hayward, on bass, and Jopey Fitzpatrick, on percussion, drive the album forward, catching you up and dropping you off at the last station. Mandy Pachios, Laura Buchanan and Alison McGuirk provide background vocals, while the honest transparency of Eric Olsson's songwriting belies the album title.

The subtitle of the album could be 'Conflicted,' something anyone who has ever lost love knows well. "Broken Clock" sounds like Tom Waits stopped smoking and took up writing horoscopes, making the point that, like a complicated relationship, "even a broken clock is right twice a day."

Dirty Little Secret

If Leon Russell was a New Englander he'd be Eric Olsson, and Dirty Little secret proves it.. Dirty Little Secret shades in Leon with Becker/Fagen, Armstrong with BB and Eric with life itself. I've been listening to Eric Olsson records from The Bombastics to Lumpy, Unit 7 and now his namesake band. Like James Brown, the bands are always tight. Over the years I've screamed my own version of Eric Olsson's lyrical turns of phrase into whatever mic I was holding at the time because it always flows through like it does in these tracks, like the beauty of the Flowers he offers here. Buy this record if you like American music, but if you a player, buy this record and cover something, any song will with ease put you in the head of one of the master songsmiths of our time. And if he's playing live near you, jump, don't skip, and later you can thank Jonny Gowanus for the good news you got here today.
