The Sultans of San Diego Rock Have Done It Again!

From the moment I heard Switchfoot live at The Roxy Theater in my hometown of Bremerton, WA...I knew I was hearing a band that would define our generation. Jon and the guys write songs that speak the heart of a generation searching to be a part of something bigger, searching for meaning, for justice, love, hope, truth. Their lyrics are universal in that they deal with human struggle, regardless of religion, race, politics, or sex. "Dirty Second Hands" is no different. This "sneak-peek" from their new album is sure to satisfy any Switchfoot fan for the moment. A little harder than their normal fare, this song puts an edge on the band's San Diego "surf rock". However, that's one of the best things about Switchfoot, they are constantly redefining themselves lyrically and musically, yet continue to stay true to their Rock. If this is any indication of the rest of the new album, we are in for a spectacular feast for the ears. Who's hungry?

Switchfoot goes trippy, and rocks out like never before.

Linda Ryan, the reviewer for this track on rhapsody.com nailed it: "Switchfoot come out swinging on "Dirty Second Hands," as metallic guitar riffs square off against distorted, bottom-heavy basslines and a seductive hypnotic beat. More than mere noise, the song features a psychedelic-tinged, Stones-ian type of heartiness that adds ammunition to this hard-rocking sorti, holding the sound together while heads bang en mass." Jon even raps on this track, plays a sitar (an east Indian instrument) and the song has a strong flavor of Indian classical music in the tune of the verses. He probably wrote it during his trip to India. This track is an achievement Switchfoot should be very proud of. Its a must buy, even if you're not a fan... this is unprecedented, a much-evolved sound, a huge leap from their previous work. This is the sound of a band that's perfected their art. The sound of a highly talented mainstream band now taking the artistic integrity approach with a never-seen-before conviction. Check it out, don't miss out.

Great song, great band!

This is a new step for Switchfoot. I dare you to try and figure out what genre they fall into now. It's like they're making a whole new sound. We'll see what the new CD is like, but as for this song, they're definitely experimenting with new sounds. But don't get me wrong--they're still the same ol' Switchfoot we know and love, I think they're just digging deeper than they have before. I think this is a great single, but I'll let you be the judge.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After gaining a foothold in the contemporary Christian music scene, Switchfoot went mainstream with 2003's The Beautiful Letdown, a double-platinum album that straddled the line between sacred and secular rock music. The band spent the rest of its career appealing to both camps. Years before Switchfoot's commercial breakthrough, though, the group struggled to make a dent in the San Diego area, where singer/guitarist Jonathan Foreman, bassist Tim Foreman, and drummer Chad Butler began playing together...
