iTunes Review

As a jam band with enviable chops, Widespread Panic are among the most engaging live acts on the festival circuit. The trick for bands with such prodigious abilities has been to find a way to distill those attributes into songs that do not require the listener be put through an endurance test. That said, 2010’s Dirty Side Down is a focused achievement. A live cut culled from a 2000 performance, “Greta” gives hardcore fans the ten-minute jam they crave, while the rest of the material showcases a band versed in country, blues, Americana, Latin rhythms and whatever else they can bring together. The excitement is there from the first strains of “Saint Ex,” a mature piece of writing that would sound right at home on classic-rock radio. In less than three minutes “St. Louis” exhibits the group’s natural dexterity in a quick dose. “Shut Up and Drive” adds some lush funk. “True to My Nature” sounds tooled up for the highway. “When You Coming Home” aches with those timeless country-music heart pangs. Dirty Sound Down may be the group’s most mature work to date and among its most accessible.

The Boys Are Back

This is the best collection of songs since Mikey. This album makes up for the previous album Free Somehow with a little more country than we are used to. North and Visting Day are good throw backs that finally made it on an album. The new sound can be heard on most of the tracks but tracks like Cotton Was King have the sound of the past as well. From start to finish this album will please for a long time.

o yeah

Going to be drivin through the Indiana countryside and this is what ill be listening to. very loud.

back to "their sound"

Ahh...What a relief. This album reminds me alot of Til the Medicine Takes, which easily their best album. This album seems to refocus the band toward what they know. John Keane was a great choice for production.

One of the many neo-hippie jam bands inheriting the road-warrior mantle left behind by the Grateful Dead, Widespread Panic established a devout grassroots following on the strength of constant touring and a loose, rootsy brand of Southern rock informed by jazz and blues textures. The group's origins date to 1982, when vocalist John Bell and guitarist Mike Houser first began playing together while attending college in Athens, GA. When bassist Dave Schools left academia to join the duo the next year,...
