iTunes Review

Coming together in Munich, Germany in the early 1990s, the Poets of Rhythm were arguably the first (and best) of the throwback funk groups — bands who embrace/emulate the organic and highly musical style of '60s and '70s acts, to the point where its nearly impossible to tell the difference. Using classic instrumentation, vintage recording gear, and, most importantly, chops galore, they began releasing super-fresh, small-run 7-inch singles on their own label Hotpie & Candy Records. The much-loved LP Practice What You Preach followed in 1993, and they continued to wow rare groove heads, record collectors, and beat fanatics throughout the decade. Discern/Define is their second full-length and is another masterpiece of timeless jams and relentlessly funky, groove-based instrumentals, oozing with wah-wahs, hi-hat-addled drums, horns, flutes, and wildly freaky old school keyboards. Like a cross between the JBs, the Headhunters, the Meters, and Can, they are the forefathers of newer but similarly minded groups like Budos Band and the Daptones. For anyone who's ever lamented "they don't make it like they used to," this one's for you.

Funk.

Funk. as in, 'this is the epitome of.' Also check out their newer record that is even more James Brown-esque. Brilliant stuff that stands in a class practically all on its own.

I've been listening to this since it came out. I'm a big J.B.s fan, and I think this is almost a modern day version of what those guys were pioneering. Good stuff!

intense grooves, fused with some laid back horn. what more could you ask for. you will thank yourself later. then go ahead and purchase The Whitefield Brothers- In The Raw. a little more stripped down, but as intense if not more so intense, groovings of some of the best-in-their-class funk providers.

German funk band Poets of Rhythm began in Munich after friends Boris Geiger and Jan Weissenfeldt were first exposed to the raw funk that came out of the U.S. in the late '60s and early '70s. Soon, they decided to form their own group, and with Geiger on percussion and vocals, Weissenfeldt on guitar, his brother Max on drums, and Jan Krause on bass, they started writing their own material. After releasing their first single, "Funky Train," in 1992, the Poets' (who had by now added Till Sahm on organ,...
