iTunes Review

Never discount the intuitive synergy that exists between twin sisters. Claudia and Alejandra Deheza sing in harmony, unison and counterpoint until the songs melt in their presence. Ben Curtis quit Secret Machines to explore the unusual chemistry and form a trio and this second album, 2010’s Disconnect from Desire, is a major step forward. Where their debut album Alpinisms made for a great bedroom closet recording where the songs held together through sheer will and meditative vibes, Disconnect demands a broader stage. Its rhythms are harder. Its melodies are more challenging and more amenable towards the pop music that all independent and/or underground artists must carefully toy with. “Heart Is Strange” sounds like a dance floor and radio fave, with its ebullient waves of melody siding up to the precise beats. “Dust Devil” turns up the dance steps. “Babelonia” twists things down the dark end of the street with ghostly vocals and the feeling that the band’s shoe-gazer origins haven’t completely dissipated in their newfound heaviness beyond the strobe lights.

Beautiful Bells

Couple of years ago School of Seven Bells grabbed everyone's attention with the time-bending instant classic, Half Asleep.
Dreamy electronic pop with tight harmonies and rich beauty.

Now with Disconnect from Desire they continue the journey into sweet, electronic lushness, but with a bit more synth edge and guitar swirl. Babelonia is a perfect song for summer travelling, or just strolling through town on a hot, balmy evening. And that's just one of the many songs here that transport you into sonic bliss land. Nice work.

Sophmore Does Stand Up

this album seems a lot more collected than Alpinisms. And don't get me wrong, that was a GREAT album. but I'm liking this album too. it's seems like a grower, nothing you cna really altch onto in the beginnign but the more you listen to it, the more you learn to love it.

and also to whoever said it sounds like King Blackshear, SHUT UP. You think EVERYTHING sounds like King Blackshear. no one cares who that band is here! we're talking about King of Seven Bells here!

Very Good!

Great follow up album! Definitley worth buying. Nothing wrong with it at all.

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Ben Curtis fled Secret Machines in 2007 to focus on School of Seven Bells, an electronics-enhanced dream pop group formed with twin sister vocalists Claudia and Alejandra Deheza (also of On!Air!Library!). They debuted in 2007 on Sonic Cathedral with the 7" recording My Cabal, which featured a remix on the B-side from Robin Guthrie — Guthrie's Cocteau Twins, as well as several of the artists the Cocteaus inspired, from My Bloody Valentine to Medicine, being apparent touchstones. Two other releases...
