All hail Louis XIV, the new King of Rock n' Roll

This EP displays why Louis XIV is one of the best rock bands around today. In an era dominated by cardboard cutout 'rock' bands which are really nothing more than boybands with guitars, bass, and drumsticks shoved into their hands, Louis XIV is a breath of fresh air. They display their talent to its full extent on 'Differences' pumping out rough, raunchy rock with a glam sheen. As others have noted, 'There's A Traitor In The Room' is the standout here, giving us a glimpse of what will probably be one of the best releases of 2008 when these guys release their sophomore album. The other tracks are amazing too, especially the cover of Queen's 'Flash's Theme'. Few bands these days have the balls or talent to cover such a rock juggernaut as Queen, but Louis has plenty of both, giving the song even more crunch in its guitar parts than Brian May gave the original. Overall, I'd say His Majesty Louis XIV is ready to ascend the throne and bring the glory back to the Realm of Rock n' Roll.

I can't be so sweet to you (until I find the right excuse)

Worth the wait, and worth your three bucks. That's pretty much all you need to know, but for the curious, and the thrifty, I'll say a little more. "There's a Traitor In This Room" is exactly what you were hoping for, if you're a Louis XIV fan. Complete with fascination with too-young girls, self-absorbed sexuality and an almost complete lack of a real melody. It's so horribly fun it should be illegal. "Your Shoes Are the Star of the Show" goes absolutely nowhere, so don't expect that, but showcases their penchant for drenching their glam in simply, nicely orchestrated string arrangements (and... there's that thing for young girls again, obviously.) Clever lyrics abound. "The Distances from Everyone to You" is one of their ultra-Rolling-Stones-ish pseudo-intropsective story songs, this time probably not a little autobiographical. It's not as good as some on The Best Little Secrets, but quite decent and probably the most "different" thing on this EP for them. And last but not least, Louis XIV are uniquely positioned to be recording Queen covers, aren't they? Hopefully everyone watching Sci Fi and getting the Flash Gordon ads will buy this and be introduced to the wonders of Louis XIV.

Louis xiv rules!

This band is diffently headed toward Rock royality. Clearly There's a Traitor in This Room blows the other songs away ( that is why it made the album) The others are OK But still better than most of the stuff you hear on the radio. I have heard a few other songs from the new album and they are really great as well.

Biography

Formed: San Diego, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

The core unit of San Diego's Louis XIV had originally played together in the rootsy, alt-rocking Convoy, which issued an album called Black Licorice in 2001. Having moved on by 2003, vocalist/guitarists Jason Hill and Brian Karscig and drummer Mark Maigaard hooked up with bassist Jimmy Armbrust and began fleshing out the Louis XIV concept — irreverent, oversexed lyrics and songwriting that channeled glam, scratchy punk, and vintage Rolling Stones. A self-recorded EP caused quite a stir locally,...
