Album Review

Knoxville, TN, alt-metal act 10 Years made their major-label debut with 2005's The Autumn Effect, an effort much beholden to the likes of Tool and Staind, and the album scored a big radio hit with the single "Wasteland." Reportedly recorded in a fractious intra-band environment (hence the title), Division sounds like the work of a band that carefully and thoroughly deconstructed its previous hit and attempted to replicate it several more times for the follow-up. Division is a smooth, radio-friendly record featuring new producer Rick Parashar's glossy layers of instruments and vocals. Occasional moments also suggest that the bandmembers now consider themselves "artists": the coda of "Picture Perfect (In Your Eyes)" is nearly as long as the body of the song itself, and features a spoken word poem read by one of the album's female backing vocalists. Division may well have the intended effect of prolonging the band's chart life, at least temporarily.

Not as good as The Autumn Effect

While this album is good, it's not as good as their debut. It feels like they went a different way with their music, and it's just not quite as good as The Autumn Effect. It feels like they lost something between the two.

Excellent CD

Though 10 Years is a relatively unknown band, they're pretty amazing. Alternating between heavy guitar and soft piano, angsty and tranquil lyrics, 10 Years knows what it's doing. I would highly recommend Just Can't Win, Beautiful, Dying Youth, Alabama, and Focus. Also look for Wasteland from their other CD- superb track!

If this album were an Olympic swimmer, it'd kick Phelps' a**!

I wrote a review last year when I had just been introduced to the album, but now I've given this album a year to sink in and I think that I should give an update:

Actions & Motives - 3/5 - This is a well produced piece, I just never became fully attatched to it.
Just Can't Win - 3/5 - Same situation with this song as with "Actions & Motives", sorry guys, I know a lot of you like these two songs a lot; I just only like them.
Beautiful - 3.5/5 - This song, realistically, was good for about three weeks then i just became a little tired of hearing it.
11:00am (Daydreamer) - 5/5 - Would have made an excellent single, better than using "Beautiful."
Dying Youth - 4/5 - I instantly became attracted to this song, the softness of this piece transitions much more smoothly into the heavier parts of this song.
Russian Roulette - 5/5 - Easily my third favorite on the album, shockingly powerfull guitar strength throughout, but the guitar doesn't over-power. Solid song.
Focus - 4/5 - Not really sure how to describe it, it's just good, haha, give it a listen and you will understand.
Drug of Choice - 4/5 - Speeds the album up a bit. Very catchy. Great song.
Picture Perfect (In Your Eyes) - 4/5 - This is an excellent song... Why the hell have I been skipping it. Ha. Learn something new everyday, I guess.
All Your Lies - 4/5 - Good song. Great mix of soft and heavy.
So Long, Good-bye - This song is awesome! Gives me goosebumbs everytime I listen to it. Probably one of the best acoustic songs I have ever heard, and my second favorite song on this album.
Alabama - 4/5 - Just as with "Dying Youth", I instantly clicked, not too many people give these two songs the credit they deserve.
Proud of You - 5/5 - I was very reluctant to listen to this piece because it was all piano and it is not what I normally listen to, but man when I gave this song a chance: AMAZING!!! By FAR the most beautiful song that I have ever heard, so it is only fitting that this is my favorite song on the album. Jesse Hasek's vocals are incredibly powerful. And if you don't agree with me, I completely understand. No hard feelings. Also, no, I'm not gay because my favorite song on this album is a slow, piano-driven piece. but if you're reading this, you're either: a) looking at how 10 Years fans react to this album or, b) getting a second oppinion on this album. So give this song the time of day for just one full listen, and if you still don't like it, then that is cool too.
Patiently - 4/5 - This is probably "Division"s version of "Seasons To Cycle" from their first album. Great way to close out an amazing album.
