A Freight Train of Funk From the Brooklyn masters

Music is emotion. And for each person, each song will mean something different. To some critics, this album means a nod to an inspired set of tight funk, tracks, which some dare call disco. But this not a disco record. The disco sound is typically a four-on-the floor beat. B.T. Express infuses some elements which disco borrowed years later when the sound was popular in the mid-late 70's. However, this is a funk record. Released 1974, not 1978. Funk was still king. And boy are these kids funky. I invite the listener to check out "This House Is Smokin'" and pause for a moment. Imagine yourself there. The bass guitar throbbing so loud it hits you in the chest. The crowd going crazy. That infectious guitar perfectly matching those horns. In fact the house wouldn't be smoking at that point, it would have been burning to the ground. Everybody in that place is clapping on beat. The hot lights creating a sweatbox of heat inside the tiny venue. And the sax player, exhausted and somehow coming up with yet another solo - and without taking a breath goes right back into the chorus riff. I work up a sweat just listening to that song. But they don't cop to being a dance band. In Do It ('Til You're Satisfied) they beg the listener to get up, get out, and do your thang. What is that thing? Your job? Your life? Your kids? They are asking you to do your best until you can't do anymore. It's a moral instruction. I once read in the liner notes that K.C. & The Sunshine Band's track "Shake Your Booty" was more than a call to the dancefloor, they meant "shake your booty" in every aspect of your life, get out and live your life the best you can. Do It 'Til You're Satisfied is that song's intellectual grandparent. And the theme continues with warnings that if you try something (drugs, gangs, etc.) and they don't do right by you, then "leave it alone" rather than try to make it work for you, which usually leads to diaster. And here, in a dance record, B.T. Express gently delivers its moral message. They feed you the beats and riffs which are sweet as sugar, and as you enjoy the ecstacy of that flavor, the words of wisdom -- the salt and vinegar -- go down just as gently. Like Chic after them, B.T. Express had a lot going on both lyrically and musically, and to dismiss them as simply a "disco" band is patently absurd. They are absolutely brilliant and over most people's heads. But that's no surprise, since most heads are nodding up and down to the music anyway.
