iTunes Review

The Devil Makes Three delivers a lively blend of old-time country music with distinct bluegrass and ragtime touches. Performed with genuine feel and a clear emphasis on rhythm, this tight trio plays acoustic guitar, banjo, and upright bass with some fiddle, harmonica, and electric guitar thrown in the mix. This is the band’s third studio release and the songs showcase sharp, wry lyrics and dark humor about drinking, desperate times, and the wages of sin, often delivered with a sly smile. Up-tempo numbers “All Hail,” the title track, “Poison Trees,” “Help Yourself,” and “Aces and Twos” chug ahead relentlessly on the strength of memorable melodies and excellent three-part harmonies, and the slower numbers are equally as solid, especially the fine country ballad “Car Wreck.” Fans of modern old-time acts like Old Crow Medicine Show, the Asylum Street Spankers, and the Avett Brothers will stomp along mightily to Do Wrong Right.

another good one

A really solid album from DM3. Those who have been to live shows in the past year have been hearing these tunes being developed, and the wait has been worth it. Stellar songwriting with catchy hooks, and fun lyrics make this an instant classic. Poison Trees is just one of the tunes I have to keep repeating, but the whole album is solid. Purchase. Play. Enjoy. Repeat.

The best band nobody has ever heard of

Pete Bernhard has to be one of the most underrated songwriters making music today . His lyrics are funny , satirical , touching , chilling , and downright blue whenever he wishes. The sound on this album is not much of a departure from previous albums, but the stories are great and the music infectious . I selfishly hope they never make it too big so that years from now I can still go see them at the Catalyst for $15 .

Keep's Getting Better

This LP is so amazingly good. For Awhile now this has felt like my little secret. Word is spreading about these three and soon everyone hear this great music. all four lp's are great I have seen them three times and soon to be fourth. Buy all their music and see them while on tour. you will not regret. By far the best new stuff out.

Biography

Formed: Santa Cruz, CA

Genre: Country

Years Active: '00s, '10s

The Devil Makes Three is kind of a strange band, As a drummerless acoustic trio consisting of two guitarists and a string bassist, the group is deeply rooted in the blues and country music, while enthusiastically incorporating elements of bluegrass, ragtime, and jug band traditions, as well. But the group also makes no bones about its punk rock influences, and despite the lack of a drummer, it always plays with the needs of dancers in mind: "We play mainly rock venues...
