Donnelly Carter Payne

Awesome!

Little Piece of PERFECT

Click "buy album" now! Might be the best iTunes purchase you make this year. This is one terrific album!

Simply a fine work; an impressive toure de force and without a doubt a worthwhile purchase.

Billy has created his most technically and emotionally sophisticated work to date with this album. Donnelly Carter Payne offers an intimate portrait of perspectives, on a powerful foundation of melody and orchestration, which is at once authentic to the genre (e.g., "She Gonna Set Me Free") and yet tastefully imbued with modern influences (see below). The music and the lyrics blend to form a flowing coherency.

The accompanying artwork, coal dust sketches etched on the side of a wagon or leather saddle, adds depth to an experience that draws the listener into the period effortlessly and deeper with each play. This is definitely an album to sit with or to take on a road trip.

Some highlights:

**"Mosey" is a powerful and primitive work song with a bare bones rhythm that just carries one along (you can almost feel the sweat).
**"Kyrie Eleison" is a soothing (dare I say spiritual) ballad with (very subtle) touches of Billy's James Taylor influences.
**"Mary Gail" is a pleasant diversion with a surprising 2nd chorus/bridge, which manages (again with great subtlety) to bring a modern (Beatles?) influence.
**"Reason and Rhyme" and "Home To Thee" are simply exquisite; easily intimate love songs or prayers for salvation (quite touching).
**"Take Me Back" and "Straight To Hell" are brooding and musically reminiscent of old Crosby Stills Nash and Young (e.g., 4 and 20 years ago…).
**"Am I Awake" is hauntingly unique, which leads well into "All the Roads" (which has a very interesting chorus melody).

There are also some rockin tunes which keep things moving (e.g. "Ashes to Ashes, "Don't Bother Me").
The album finishes with "Dare I Believe", a perfect ending.

Billy is great storyteller and has found his medium in the concept album.
