Album Review

All of Mercyful Fate's potential was fulfilled on Don't Break the Oath, a doomy, gothic collection of post-Priest/Maiden black metal preoccupied with Satan and the occult. Hank Shermann and Michael Denner keep their progressive rock tendencies reigned in while still delivering plenty of the neo-classical feel that gives the music its atmosphere, and King Diamond uses his vocal range to great theatrical effect. Fate's sound and attitude were highly influential on later gothic/black metal bands, especially in Europe, and Don't Break the Oath consistently encapsulates their appeal.

Beautiful Hymns, Vol. II

Very close to being as good as the great Melissa album (though many others consider this the best), this another wonderous collection of hymns that are without comparison. Every song here is great. "The Oath" is simply amazing, as is "Come to the Sabbath". The more "listener-friendly" songs, such as "Gypsy", and "A Dangerous Meeting" are equally as good in their own right. Another one that will live on forever.

Classic

A landmark in the Black Metal genre. Mercyful Fate was a part of the first wave of Black Metal. Most of the bands from the first wave were Thrash Metal bands with satanic elements in their music (Mercyful Fate, Venom, Bathory, Celtic Frost, etc.) Out of all of those bands Mercyful Fate is definitely my favorite. King Diamond is one of the best Black Metal vocalist's because his banshee like shriek is not human. He can get his voice at a higher pitch than any other Black Metal vocalist ever. This is probably their best album along with Melissa and 9 in my opinion. The song The Oath is reason enough to buy this album. Hank Shermann's guitar work on that song and this album in general is absolutely god-like. If you are a fan of Black Metal, Thrash Metal, or Gothic Metal you owe it to yourself to buy this album now.

FREAKING AWESOME

If you don't have album, don't even consider yourself a metalhead

Danish band featuring vocalist King Diamond, guitarists Hank Shermann and Michael Denner, bassist Timi Hansen, and drummer Kim Ruzz. Mercyful Fate won a large cult following thanks to their dramatic lyrics, showing a Gothic obsession with evil and the occult, and Diamond's amazing vocal range, which shifted from a low growl to a banshee scream, plus the interplay of Shermann and Denner. The band broke up after two full-length albums owing to differences of opinion about what direction the group should...
