Album Review

Elton John became a true superstar with 1972's Honky Chateau. He followed that album with Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player, his most direct, pop-oriented album to date. Designed as a pastiche of classic and contemporary pop styles, the album almost sounds like an attempt to demonstrate the diversity of the John/Taupin team. Though the hits are remarkable — "Daniel" is a moving ballad and "Crocodile Rock" is a sly take on '50s rock & roll — the album is slightly uneven. Several of the album tracks, particularly the knowing "I'm Gonna Be a Teenage Idol" and the rocking "Elderberry Wine," are as strong as anything John had recorded, but there are too many melodies that simply don't catch hold. Nevertheless, the singles were strong enough to keep the album at the top of the charts, and at its best, it is a very enjoyable piece of well-crafted pop/rock. [The CD reissue includes the bonus tracks "Screw You (Young Man's Blues)," "Jack Rabbit," "Whenever You're Ready (We'll Go Steady Again)," and the piano version of "Skyline Pigeon."]

Forgot how great an album this was

by EJ Maven

Building up my Elton John collection for my mp3 player and I kept running into gems from this album that I didn't have digitally till I realized that I had purchased the whole album. Tracks 1-10 represent the original lineup. I don't think there is a dog in the bunch.

CLASSIC POP ROCK

by mattal1958

What Elton started with HONKY CHATEAU, he realizes fully with DON'T SHOOT ME I'M ONLY THE PIANO PLAYER. Featuring mega-hits like "Daniel" and "Crocodile Rock," it also features strong album tracks nearly as good as the hit singles: the rocker "Elderberry Wine," the catchy pop rock of "Teacher I Need You," the gorgeous ballad, "High Flying Bird" (which actually ended the original album before the bonus tracks included here), the haunting "Blues For Baby And Me," and the parody of red necks everywhere, "Texas Love Song." This album doesn't get the accolades it deserves, because the very next one, GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD, is seen as Elton's masterpiece by most folks. To me, as great as GYBR was and still is, I prefer this album. It's a classic of pop rock, and one of Elton's finest collection of songs.

Texan Love Song

For a Brit, Bernie Taupin sure got those Texans' number right!
