Album Review
Elton John became a true superstar with 1972's Honky Chateau. He followed that album with Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player, his most direct, pop-oriented album to date. Designed as a pastiche of classic and contemporary pop styles, the album almost sounds like an attempt to demonstrate the diversity of the John/Taupin team. Though the hits are remarkable — "Daniel" is a moving ballad and "Crocodile Rock" is a sly take on '50s rock & roll — the album is slightly uneven. Several of the album tracks, particularly the knowing "I'm Gonna Be a Teenage Idol" and the rocking "Elderberry Wine," are as strong as anything John had recorded, but there are too many melodies that simply don't catch hold. Nevertheless, the singles were strong enough to keep the album at the top of the charts, and at its best, it is a very enjoyable piece of well-crafted pop/rock. [The CD reissue includes the bonus tracks "Screw You (Young Man's Blues)," "Jack Rabbit," "Whenever You're Ready (We'll Go Steady Again)," and the piano version of "Skyline Pigeon."]

Album Before Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Bought this record in 1973 and was always one of my favorite albums. Still listen to it. Big hits, Daniel and Crocodile Rock but the other 8 original songs were my favorites (Songs 1 thru 10 original LP)
A Essential
Whether you’re just beginning your journey into the realm of Elton John, or have already began this, “Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player” is a classic! This was the first CD and record I ever bought, and I treasure these two recordings. Of all the Elton John albums, this is by far the best, for it is a perfect balance of his pop and slow songs. Songs like “I’m Gonna Be a Teenage Idol,” “Daniel,” “Teacher I Need You,” “Midnight Creeper,” and “High Flying Bird” are (in my opinion) some of his best songs. Also if you have heard Elton John’s newer stuff and disliked it, I urge you to buy this album, because it is much better for a “starter.”
A Must for Every Collection!!!
This album has the depth and soul of so many sounds as well as the extreme. From "Texas Love Song" to "Skyline Pidgeon". This album exposes the essence of Elton John's personality. Bernie Taupin's colorful words paint an elaborate image through Elton's voice. This album has been one of my favorites and has inspired me in my work.
