iTunes Review

No Doubt’s breakthrough, Tragic Kingdom, is best remembered for two key singles: “Just a Girl,” a hopping third-wave feminist anthem, and “Don’t Speak,” a Madonna-esque ballad about residual band tension (singer Gwen Stefani and bassist Tony Kamal were once an item). Dig further and you might be surprised. Titled as a wry nod to the double-edged nature of the band’s Southern California upbringing, the album is virtually kaleidoscopic in its run at various pop conventions. “Hey You” is a pastiche of Revolver/Sgt. Pepper-era Beatles; “You Can Do It” owes a lot to Parliament’s “Flashlight.” And the bouncy horns on “The Climb” eventually morph into a knowing evocation of circus-like sound. The band would grow even more adventurous in toying with its ska-pop roots, but this is a fine start down that road.
