Annie’s sophomore album Don’t Stop (2009) is smart, salacious and confident. The Norwegian dance diva benefits from production input by such studio wizards as Xenomania, Timo Kaukolampi, Paul Epworth and Richard X. Annie’s breathy vocals bring an intimacy to these mostly fast ‘n’ furious tracks, lending her the air of a spunky street gamine rather than an icebound sex goddess. Riding atop brazen, hard-throbbing beats, she dishes out put-downs (“I Don’t Like Your Band,” “My Love Is Better”) and surrenders to desire (“Loco,” “Don’t Stop”) with equal exuberance. Especially potent are the Giorgio Moroder-styled “Songs Remind Me of You” and the marching band-driven “Hey Annie.” To her credit, Annie doesn’t merely satisfy the groove cravings of her fans — “Marie Cherie,” for instance, delves into aural film noir with its creepy lyrics and darkly shimmering backdrop. There’s some shameless kitsch here too (“Heaven and Hell” and “The Breakfast Song”). And Don’t Stop does it all with more imagination that just about any dance-floor project in recent memory.

Excuse me, imma let you finish, but Annie just released the best album of ALL TIME

THE artist to watch

First, I need to kindly disagree with the 'music sounds better...' reviewer - 'Marie Cherie' is EXACTLY the kind of quirky electro track Annie should be making, and second, mention that the 2-disc UK import contains the additional 'single' songs on the 'All Night' EP. Now that I've said that...

So there was a few month delay, then a single, then a LONGER delay...well, you get it. Annie's own 'response' to what Island Records construed as 'poor chart performance' of 'I Know UR Girlfriend Hates Me', which was to ultimately leave the label was not a disappointing career move, it was BRILLIANT. 'Greatest Hit' made her the underground darling, "pop til you drop'" made her the dj's darling, catching the eyes of the labels, at which point her debut made her a hipster darling the world over. What people don't realize is that with the exposure from her debut, she amassed a subtle yet sizeable and very VERY loyal 'indie-dance' oriented fanbase. They (myself included) are following pretty much her every move, while she follows her own musical terms (just like fellow Norwegian Robyn) on her own label, all the while still garnering buzz in the mainstream - an enormously difficult balance to maintain that she pulls off here. Yes, this delayed release did detract from the timing of momentum following 'Anniemal' and slightly covered up the fact that she is the INSPIRATION for the latest electro-pop wave, NOT an imitator...but it was definitely worth it. The word on all label execs lips is that the next wave of pop music is ELECTRO - ladies and gentlemen...the PRINCESS of electronica currently reasides in Berlin, and her name is ANNIE. End of story.

Was the wait worth it?

Eh, not really. This album has been leaked, in a variety of different versions, over the past year or so all over the internet. What we get here is mostly a rehash of the leaks and two, or is it three, new tracks. The new tracks are fine, but anyone who is a fan of Annie has already heard most of this and we're left wondering where's the new, the fresh, the songs we're going to dance to. This album is fine, but it's been surrounded by so many problems and delays that it just feels like a non-event.

Also, where are the best three songs that should have been core components of this album? I Know Your Girlfriend Hates Me, Anthonio and Two of Hearts? These are all amazing songs, and only one is avail. through legal downloading retail means. I personally think I Know Your Girlfriend Hates Me was one of the catchiest tunes I'd heard in the last year and a half, and yet, you still can't buy it anywhere. I have to wonder also, what she was thinking with a couple of these songs. Namely Heaven and Hell, Marie Cherie and The Breakfast Song. HORRIBLE. Just bad.

My true hope is that since most of this was recorded, oh almost two years ago now, that Annie will put out a new album of fresh stuff, more like the songs we fell in love with on Anniemal, very soon. Because frankly, this album is a piecemeal rehash and doesn't even include the best few songs she put out in the last year or so.
