Album Review

Chrysalis Records introduced American audiences to Billy Idol with this debut EP, which led off with Idol's big UK hit as part of Generation X (and one of the best power pop numbers ever), "Dancing With Myself." Also included were a faithful cover of Tommy James And The Shondells' "Mony Mony" (not the later chart-topping live version), "Untouchables," and "Baby Talk." With this short record, which stayed in the album charts over a year, Idol was established as a post-punk hard rock singer of considerable promise. (A 1983 reissue of Don't Stop featured an interview with Idol conducted by MTV VJ Martha Quinn.)

Come on, lighten up!

This was Billy's first solo album! Jeez, people, why can't you take that to heart? Okay, in song order: 1. Mony Mony: Better than the original. This song really matches Billy's voice..., no, actually, everything about him. 2. Baby Talk: Not his strongest of all songs sung, but not the weakest. If you're a true fan, then you'll like this very much. 3. Untouchables: This one stood out to me as a real love song. I don't know why! It just seems like the most upbeat (if that's possible) out of all 4 songs. 4. Dancing With Myself: You have to be completely insane to hate it! This has awesome written all over it. It's just a beautiful song about being yourself all the time, no matter what the consequences are. Heck, the first time I ever heard Dancing With Myself I said, "Oh my god, I think I just got myself a new motto!" That's how powerful it is.

My advice on which song you should buy? All of them! That's how great they are! You'd really be missing out on a piece of music history if you didn't get Don't Stop. Go Billy! Rock on.

Only Four. Bummer.

(Not like three stars. More like three and a half.)
Billy Idol was definitely one of the greatest 80's rock...well...idols. Don't Stop was the very first album that he released to the public. It was an EP and it was a great example of Billy Idol's music to come.
Don't Stop is good for the most part. It has "Mony Mony", which was so good that "Weird Al" Yankovic wanted to parody it with a song called "Alimony". It also has "Dancing With Myself" which was so good, it was used in that one movie Flushed Away. It also contains "Untouchables" which isn't too bad, I guess. The weakest track on the EP is "Baby Talk"
I'm pretty sure I gave this only three stars (Not like three stars, more like three and a half) due to the fact that there are only four Billy Idol songs on this EP. But, then again, an EP only has, what, four to five songs on it.

Sign of what was to come

And what did come. Billy managed to survive the break up of Generation X and avoid the then imploding punk rock (sadly it didn't end, only the great bands did). Billy's new direction was still inspired by his punk rock days, but also headed towards a more straight-edge rock style.

The Don't Stop EP is the beginning of his solo career and the beginning of his now famous sound. Love him or hate him, musical genius or former punk sell-out, it all started here
So if you love Billy Idol's music, or even if you just like some of his other early work like the material off of his first LP, then you'll like Don't Stop. If you like good, old-fashioned style rock, then you'll probably like Don't Stop. If you're a "punk" and you think all artists who don't sound the same are sell-outs, then you'll probably never even read this review or think about listening to the album. Because you're a poser.
