Album Review

An updated EP takes the by-now-ancient "Planet Rock" beat and runs it through the 1990s hip-hop production machine. The results aren't all that successful, even though the sound is now contemporary. But its hook was old-school, as was its charm. The newer version lacks bite.

The VIP of Electronic Music

Kraftwerk might not have found it's way to to the US public were it not for Bamabaataa. Although his style may just sound like old school rap at first, he differs from groups like Run-D.M.C. in that he incorporated many aspects of techno from Kraftwerk and others that were not nearly as popular in the US as they were in Europe.

Even before he began recording in 1980, Bambaataa was hip-hop's foremost DJ, an organizer and promoter of the large block parties during the mid- to late '70s which presaged the rise of rap. After the success of Planet Rock, he recorded electro-oriented rap only sparingly, concentrating...
