Album Review

Michael Brecker's second album as a leader is almost the equal of his first. Surprisingly, only one song ("Suspone") uses his working quintet of the period (which consists of guitarist Mike Stern, pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Jeff Andrews and drummer Adam Nussbaum) although those musicians also pop up on other selections with the likes of pianists Don Grolnick and Herbie Hancock, bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Jack DeJohnette and violinist Mark O'Connor. Brecker (on tenor and the EWI) is in superb form, really ripping into the eight pieces (mostly group originals). Recommended.

Another work of Brecker brilliance

Of course, all songs on this groundbreaking, inspiring album are phenomenal, and it only comes up barely short of the brilliant debut album "Michael Brecker." Most jazzers know of the great songs that begin the album, but the last 3 songs are so good they make me shiver! I am talking mostly about the absolute genius work called "The Gentleman & Hizcane."This gem requires repeated listenings to really "get it." The song is transcendant and loose melodically and makes you go "huh?" at first. Keep listening - it's the most brilliant jazz song of the 1980's. Enough said.

wow

Michael Brecker is a beast!
