You can hear the hunger..this ain't the '80's anymore!
Whew! When Mr. Cook decides to do something, he sure knows how to make it his own! I've never thought of this song as a song of deep hunger and desire, just more of a "coming of age" type song. David Cook completely shatters that stereotype. His range is incredible, his drive is apparent and his tone brings you to your knees. David brings a fresh, new sound to this song. Don't You Forget To Buy It!!!
Don't Be Surprised
I don't think there can be much denying that David Cook is not only versatile vocally (as he once famously claimed) but that he's one of the most gifted rock vocalists to come along in quite a while. On this track, recorded as the "boot song" to play over video of eliminated contestants on American Idol, his voice is at its most aggressively sexy, with growls and purrs liberally sprinkled over a pretty straightforward treatment of the Simple Minds original. It's a sound that might surprise some people; but eventually one learns not to be surprised by the things this guy can do - and does - vocally. From a gorgeous falsetto (see Avalanche from his debut album) to the deep "down, down, down" notes here, he shows outstanding range, control and phrasing; you're never quite know what's around the corner, and it makes for a very engaging listening experience.
I'm not sure 80's New Wave music is the best fit for such a layered voice, but as a fan of the original recording, and a fan of the singer, I'm more than happy to see the two meshed. Besides, this material was undoubtedly chosen for him. I'm very much looking forward to seeing where he takes that voice when singing his own music on his sophomore album, due to be released in late spring.
Fantastic song
He has done it again. He has the magic touch. Loved the original but LOVE this one even more. Thanks David see you on tour :)
