iTunes Review

While Lyle Lovett may be at his best as a somber country-western balladeer, he is equally adept at upbeat gospel shouters, rolling New Orleans-styled ramblers, sarcastic rockers and novelty tunes of any style. He is that rare performer who can execute meticulously and yet sound soulful and impromptu. His own writing takes its time in coming and much of Natural Forces features the work of other writers, from his often-hailed fellow Texans Townes Van Zandt (the downcast “Loretta”) and Vince Bell (“Sun and Moon and Stars”) to Carolina’s David Ball (the sweet moody ballad, “Don’t You Think I Feel It Too”) to several co-writers, the sprightly pumping “It’s Rock and Roll” with Robert Earl Keen, the food-obsessed “Pantry” with April Kimble and the traditional jump blues, “Farmer Brown/ Chicken Reel.” With just the title track and “Empty Blue Shoes” credited to Lovett alone, Natural Forces still plays like a Lovett original, since he puts his unmistakable stamp on everything he sings.

Lyle Lovett does it again. His storytelling and songwriting are always truthful, honest and forthright. His blend of american folk and country are mixed wonderfully in this album.

Saw him last night (9th time). This is a good'n! Great mixes, musicianship and of course, Lyle's incomparable vocals.
Damn, he puts on a good show!

Don't forget Tommy Elskes

Just want to mention something the description didn't mention and I am sure others will not notice. But the tune "Bohemia" was written by a terrific singer songwriter that everyone would do some good in checking out.
More importantly he now calls New Mexico his home

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Lyle Lovett was one of the most distinctive and original singer/songwriters to emerge during the '80s. Though he was initially labeled as a country singer, the tag never quite fit him. Lovett had more in common with '70s singer/songwriters like Guy Clark, Jesse Winchester, Randy Newman, and Townes Van...
