Album Review

For his second score for a feature film, following Kissing Jessica Stein (he also collaborated with Eumir Deodato on Bossa Nova), Brazilian pianist Marcelo Zarvos takes on director Tod Williams' adaptation of the John Irving novel A Widow for One Year, retitled The Door in the Floor. Even for those unfamiliar with the novel's plot (which concerns domestic upheaval in the life of a writer of children's books during a summer spent in upscale East Hampton, Long Island), the music is suggestive of a thoughtful drama. Zarvos, who plays piano on many of the tracks, moves very slowly, creating glacial musical textures with sustained notes and chords picked up by strings that rise and fall gently like waves along the shore. All is certainly not well in East Hampton, but the troubles clearly are emotional and largely internal, and the music expresses calm sadness for much of its running time. The film may concern a family on vacation, but the music tells you that it's no day at the beach.

The secret masterpiece of Brazilian Marcelo Zarvos

I downloaded "Reprise" from Itunes a year ago based on the 30 second clip. That song grew on me, so I purchased "Down the hatch" and "The Pawn." Since then, they have become the gems of my soundtrack collection. I'm not sure why this album has not received more attention, more accolades or more awards because it's possibly one of the greatest/yet relatively unknown modern film compositions. Zarvos's score is reflective. “The Pawn” is a soft, compelling masterpiece. “Reprise” ranges from the calm contemplation of the piano to moving, soaring orchestral strings. Each note, chord, and key signature in these tracks is perfectly framed. It’s hard to compare the Brazilian Zarvos’s composition style to Williams, Zimmer, and Goldsmith because it is unique. It needs to be experienced to be understood. However, I would not be surprised to someday see Zarvos’s name among the great composers of the film industry. He’s certainly made a great case for himself with “The Door in the Floor.” Before downloading the entire album, may I recommend my favorite tracks: 3, 7, 16, & 17.

Moving

I bought this score about a year ago - and it is still one of my most frequently played albums. Zarvos has created a beautifully touching theme to a film that is both haunting and shocking. The score really made this film... Each note seems perfectly matched to the emotion of each scene. I often play this score when I go running on the beach, or on rainy days when I don't want to get out of bed... The instrumentals evoke a sadness that lingers. Beautifully composed - "The Door in the Floor" soundtrack will not leave you disappointed! My favorite tracks include - Down the Hatch, Reprise, Orient Point, The Pawn, and The Kuleshov Effect.
