iTunes Review

This remarkable collection features 59 rare tracks, studio outtakes, home recordings and demos drawn from every stage of Buddy Holly’s brief but remarkable career, running the gamut from Holly’s tentative but nonetheless fascinating teenage stabs at songs by Hank Snow and Elvis Presley to the entirety of the fabled Apartment Tapes, hushed acoustic numbers recorded by Holly a short time before his death in February of 1959. Though much of this material has been collected before, by presenting all of it as a single coherent document Geffen Records has handed listeners the equivalent of an artist’s sketchbook, a collection of rugged but revelatory work that offers a tantalizing glimpse into Holly’s creative process. Even the covers, of which there are many, are remarkable, not only for Holly’s reliably incendiary performances but for their stylistic breadth. Holly’s canny choice of covers explicitly illustrates the manner in which he was able to synthesize the raw materials of American popular music, honky-tonk, Blues, Creole music, and rock ‘n’ roll into a fascinatingly polyglot, but distinctively new style of music that was entirely his own.

Outstanding

Outstanding!! It's ABOUT TIME these recordings were issued. This release is a testament to the true genius of Buddy's unexampled contribution to rock-n-roll music. Once in a blue moon a record company actually does the right thing, even if it takes 50 YEARS!!! The levy isn’t dry and the music didn’t die, Buddy Holly lives every time we play Rock-n-Roll!!!!!!

iTunes correction on Disc 2 track 18!

iTunes made a mistake in it's listing. "Peggy Sue Got Married" is the apartment version, not the single version. If you are into Buddy Holly buy this album not only for the "Apartment Demos", but also for the undubbed versions of his hits.

what an influence over time

these are timeless classics that many have tried to inherit. you can hear some influence in T. Irie Dread also.

Biography

Born: September 7, 1936 in Lubbock, TX

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '50s

Buddy Holly is perhaps the most anomalous legend of '50s rock & roll — he had his share of hits, and he achieved major rock & roll stardom, but his importance transcends any sales figures or even the particulars of any one song (or group of songs) that he wrote or recorded. Holly was unique, his legendary status and his impact on popular music all the more extraordinary for having been achieved in barely 18 months. Among his rivals, Bill Haley was there first and established rock &...
