Best album of the year
Simply haunting. Its density makes up for its short length, just as engrossing if not more so than anything Animal Collective's ever created (besides ODDSAC). It brings you into the swamp, and then blows you out of the water. For those who've enjoyed Animal Collective's darker selections such as "Street Flash", "Safer", and "On a Highway", this album is a dream. 420 recommended
Welcome to the Swamp
For those who are afraid that Avey solo just isn't as good as Animal Collective, don't worry. It has everything that Avey contributed to AC, but in a much different but equally good form. His vocals are a bit smoother this time around, but they are just as emotive and experimental as on something like Strawberry Jam. The melodies on this record are just as good as on MPP.
Lyrically, Avey Tare/Dave Portner is at his best. Musically, he is producing the same stuff that has made Animal Collective one of the most, if not the most, reputable bands in all of indie-dom. Creatively, he has produced a very consistent concept-driven album that shows that he is not afraid to be more than a little bizarre, like in early AC albums.
If you are still reading this review, you have failed. Buy the album, put on your headphones, and enter the swamp.
Great album!
Avey Tare did something great here. The album art has a black background with a green alligator in front. If anyone was wondering why that is then it is because the album has a swampy feel throughout the whole thing. All songs have a simple background beat that sound like someone is banging on a drum with a swamp inside. Buy this album!
