George is a musical genius.

I've always hated the phrase singer-songwriter. To me the name represents a genre and style of music that I simply do not enjoy. There are, however, a few standout artists for which only that title can be used. George Stathakes is one such standout. His music speaks from a strange and dark place, allowing the listener to take a journey through the mind that could of only created such an album as Drawings In the Dust. From the opener, Silver Dagger, it is clear that this album will be different than most. With his gritty Dylan-Waits inspired vocals on acoustic songs like Shadow of Your Name to the full blown blues-folk-indie rock band arrangements in The Flood and title track Drawings in the Dust (complete with dueling clarinet-trumpet solos), it is clear that Mr. Stathakes and his cohorts are bringing something very unique and very good (in this reviewer's humble opinion) to folk music. You might call it weird, you might be polite and call it 'different,' but no matter what you call it, give Drawings In The Dust a chance to grow on you. For once you allow these songs to do so, they will never leave you alone. And that my dear friends, is a very good thing.
