iTunes Review

Bruce Springsteen has always had an eclectic appreciation for music. The synth-punk band Suicide, which played in NYC punk clubs while Bruce & The E Street Band were tearing up the Jersey Shore and eventually the world, always held a special spot in Springsteen's heart and mind. Suicide's song "Frankie Teardrop" inspired Springsteen's own "State Trooper" from Nebraska, and here Bruce directly covers Suicide's "Dream Baby Dream," intuitively understanding the haunted, Roy Orbison–like vision the group used as its initial spark. This track was a highlight of The Boss' Devils + Dust tour, and this live version lets those who missed the tour enjoy this brilliant cover, which—with just harmonium and Bruce's iconic vocals—fills in the beauty at the song's heart. Beat the Devil, a Brooklyn-based indie trio, fire up an organ-rich punk version of "Mr. Ray" (a track from Suicide's second album) that rocks as if its life depended upon it. Suicide itself—Martin Rev and Alan Vega—appear with a grungy live version of "Dream Baby Dream" that's representative of Suicide's adventurous, unique work.

Powerful

I heard/saw this song done live for the first time on the Devils and Dust tour at the Rosemont Theatre in Rosemont,IL. I originally thought it was a new song since I had never heard of it before. It closed the show on the second half of the Devils tour in 2005. It is extremely powerful live. I think it is great that performers like Springsteen make people aware of obscure songs that will open their minds and ears to new experiences and maybe delve deeper into other artists catalogs. I hope Springsteen releases a Devils and Dust live CD or DVD. Well worth the 99 cents.

Hypnotic in it's simplicity

I was lucky enought to see quite a few shows on the D&D tour so while others were bemoaning this song being added as the the closer night after night I was hooked from the first time. It was not a song I knew and I'd never heard of Suicide before. But I think this gave folks a little insight into how Bruce views and listens to music for himself. His performance of this at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia was an experience I'll never forget. He just stood there on the side of the stage, eyes closed, hand clenched at his side and you could see he was lost in the song. It was like he was transforming back to his "younger days". The phantom keyboard in the background slowly winding its way into the song and turning it into a strangely mystical moment. I know this song isn't for everyone and that's ok. I however am more than happy to add it to my collection.

Dream Baby Dream

Bruce is a master and makes this song incredible. His voice is so incredible and the repetive lyrics make the song stronger and more meaniful. I think his version of the song is much better and more of a masterpiece. He truely is a musical legend. It is a must for any springsteen fan
